What Is a Hookup Wire?
Hookup wire is single-conductor, insulated wire used for internal point-to-point wiring inside equipment, panels and electronic assemblies rather than for building or branch-circuit wiring. It's classified by UL style number, each of which defines a specific combination of insulation material, voltage rating and temperature rating — UL1007 and UL1569 are common lower-voltage (300V) PVC-insulated styles for electronics assembly, UL1015 steps up to 600V PVC insulation for panel and appliance wiring, and UL1061 is a thinner-wall 300V style often used where space inside an enclosure is tight.
Conductor construction (stranded vs. solid) is chosen for the application, not interchangeably: stranded wire flexes without breaking and is preferred anywhere the wire moves or vibrates, while solid wire holds its shape and is easier to route and solder into fixed breadboard or terminal connections but work-hardens and cracks under repeated flexing. Higher-temperature builds substitute PTFE or silicone insulation for PVC when the wire routes near heat sources beyond PVC's typical 80-105°C rating.

UL1007 and UL1061 are both 300V PVC-insulated styles commonly used in electronics assembly, with UL1061 typically having a thinner insulation wall for tighter routing; UL1015 is rated to 600V with a heavier insulation wall, making it the standard choice for panel and appliance wiring carrying higher voltages. The style number is a shorthand for a specific certified combination of voltage, temperature and insulation thickness — they aren't freely interchangeable where the equipment's listing specifies one.
Should I use stranded or solid hookup wire?
Stranded wire is preferred anywhere the wire will flex, vibrate, or be routed through moving assemblies, since the multiple thin conductors resist fatigue cracking that a single solid conductor would eventually develop. Solid wire is easier to strip, route and hold its bent shape, making it the better choice for fixed breadboard prototyping or point-to-point wiring that won't move once installed.
How do I choose the right AWG size for hookup wire?

If the wire is used for internal wiring inside equipment that itself carries a UL listing, the hookup wire typically needs to carry an appropriate UL style listing to preserve that end-product certification — using unlisted wire internally, even if electrically adequate, can be flagged during UL follow-up inspection or invalidate the product's listing.
