What Is a HID Ballast?

A high-intensity discharge (HID) ballast provides the high starting voltage needed to strike an arc inside a metal halide, high-pressure sodium, or mercury vapor lamp, then limits the current so the lamp doesn't draw runaway amperage once the arc is established. Unlike a simple resistor, an HID ballast is a reactive component — typically a wound core-and-coil transformer, though electronic ballasts are increasingly common — matched to a specific lamp wattage and type.

Probe-start ballasts use a third starting electrode inside the lamp and need no separate ignitor, but they run less efficiently and have shorter lamp life. Pulse-start ballasts pair with a two-electrode lamp and an external ignitor to deliver a high-voltage pulse, producing faster warm-up, better lumen maintenance, and longer rated lamp life — this is why probe-start and pulse-start components are not interchangeable even at the same wattage.

What's the difference between probe-start and pulse-start metal halide ballasts?

A probe-start ballast strikes the arc using a third starting electrode built into the lamp itself, requiring no external ignitor, but it runs the lamp less efficiently and shortens lamp life due to the starting electrode's ongoing wear. A pulse-start ballast pairs with a two-electrode lamp and a separate ignitor module that delivers a high-voltage pulse to strike the arc, giving faster warm-up, better lumen maintenance over life, and typically 50% longer rated lamp life. The two systems use different lamp bases and are not interchangeable.

Can I use an HPS ballast to run a metal halide lamp, or vice versa?

No. Metal halide and high-pressure sodium ballasts have different open-circuit voltage and current-limiting characteristics tuned to each lamp chemistry's arc voltage. Running the wrong lamp type on a ballast leads to poor starting, unstable operation, or premature lamp and ballast failure. Some 'dual' or retrofit kits exist that combine a compatible ballast with a self-ballasted or ballast-bypass LED lamp, but a standard MH ballast will not properly run an HPS lamp.

How do I identify the right replacement ballast for a failed fixture?

Check the fixture's ballast label or the lamp's ANSI ballast code (e.g., M59, S62) — this single code identifies the lamp wattage, type, and the electrical characteristics the ballast must supply. Also confirm input voltage (a multi-tap ballast wired for 277V will not perform correctly if wired for 120V) and starting method (probe-start vs. pulse-start), since a mismatch on any of these three specs will cause the new ballast to fail to start the lamp correctly.

Are HID ballasts being phased out in favor of LED?

Many facilities are retrofitting HID fixtures to LED for the energy savings and longer service life, and some jurisdictions restrict sale of certain probe-start metal halide ballasts under efficiency regulations. That said, HID ballasts remain widely stocked for maintaining existing fixtures, and full LED retrofit is often deferred until a fixture's ballast or lamp actually fails, making replacement ballasts an active MRO category.

What does a multi-tap ballast mean and why does it matter for stocking spares?

A multi-tap ballast has several primary voltage taps (commonly 120V, 208V, 240V, and 277V) brought out to a wiring block, letting one ballast SKU serve fixtures on different supply voltages depending on which tap is wired in. Stocking multi-tap ballasts as MRO spares reduces the number of distinct SKUs needed to cover a facility with mixed electrical service, compared to stocking single-tap ballasts for each voltage separately.
