What Is a Master Link?

A master link is the load-rated connecting link at the top of a chain sling or multi-leg lifting assembly, gathering one or more sling legs onto a single point that attaches to a crane hook, and is manufactured and proof-tested as a matched load-bearing component rather than a generic ring. Master links are graded to match the chain grade of the legs they connect — Grade 80 or Grade 100 alloy steel chain requires a correspondingly rated Grade 80 or Grade 100 master link, since mixing a lower-rated link with higher-rated chain would make the link the weak point of the assembly regardless of the chain's own rating.

Configuration depends on the number of sling legs: a simple master link works for a single-leg or basic bridle hitch, while an oblong master link (elongated shape) provides more room for multiple leg attachment points without overcrowding a round ring, and a master link with sub-links (smaller secondary rings welded or fitted to the main link) is used on multi-leg slings so each leg has its own defined connection point rather than all legs bunching on the same section of the main link, which can cause uneven loading and wear.

Why does the master link's grade need to match the chain grade?

A rigging assembly's overall rated capacity is limited by its weakest component — if Grade 100 chain (rated for higher working load per given chain size than Grade 80) is connected to a Grade 80 master link, the link becomes the limiting factor and the assembly can only be safely used at the lower Grade 80 rating regardless of what the chain itself could handle. Always match or exceed the master link's grade to the chain grade used in the sling legs.

What's the difference between a master link and a master link with sub-links?

A plain master link is a single load-rated ring or oblong link that all sling legs attach to directly. A master link with sub-links has smaller secondary rings fitted or welded onto the main link, giving each individual sling leg its own defined attachment point — this is specified on multi-leg (typically 3- or 4-leg) slings to prevent all the legs from bunching together on one section of the main link, which can cause uneven load distribution and accelerated wear at the contact points.

How is the working load limit of a master link assembly determined?

The rated WLL stamped on the master link itself is based on a straight, evenly-distributed pull, but a multi-leg sling's actual safe working load also depends on the sling angle (the load capacity of angled legs is reduced compared to a vertical pull) and how many legs are actually sharing the load. The master link's WLL, the chain's WLL, and the sling angle factor must all be considered together — the link's own WLL is not automatically the safe working load of the whole assembly at any given rigging angle.

Can a master link be used with chain from a different manufacturer?

Master links and chain are typically sold and rated as compatible components based on matching grade and chain size, and most rigging standards call for maintaining traceability and certification for the assembled sling. Mixing components from different manufacturers is generally discouraged unless the assembler can confirm compatible dimensions and matching or higher-rated grade, since an improperly matched link-to-chain fit can affect how load is transferred through the connection.

Do master links need periodic inspection like chain does?

Yes — master links are subject to wear, deformation and potential cracking just like the chain they connect, and should be inspected on the same schedule as the rest of the chain sling assembly for wear at bearing points, elongation, nicks, gouges, and any deformation from its original shape. A damaged or worn master link should be removed from service by the same criteria used for damaged chain links.
