Why do I need a refrigerant recovery machine instead of just venting a system?

A recovery machine removes refrigerant into a certified recovery cylinder so the sealed system can be safely opened for repair, and technicians performing this work are generally required to hold EPA 608 certification.

What vacuum level should I pull before charging a refrigeration system?

Most manufacturers and industry best practice call for pulling the system down to below 500 microns, verified with a digital vacuum gauge, before introducing refrigerant — a standard analog manifold gauge isn't precise enough at this range. Achieving a deep, stable vacuum removes moisture and non-condensable air that would otherwise reduce system efficiency and promote internal corrosion over the equipment's service life.

Is a manifold gauge set for R-410A interchangeable with one for R-22?

The hoses and gauge faces are often rated for both, but R-410A operates at meaningfully higher system pressures than R-22, so confirm the gauge set's pressure rating and fitting sizes are specifically rated for R-410A service before using it on a higher-pressure system. What's the difference between flaring and swaging copper tube in refrigeration work?

Flaring shapes the end of a tube into a cone that seats against a matching fitting to create a compression seal, commonly used at valves and equipment connections that may need to be disconnected later. Swaging expands one tube end so a second piece of tube of the same diameter can be inserted and brazed, creating a permanent joint without a coupling fitting. The two use different tooling and serve different joint types.

What does a combustion analyzer check, and when is it required?

A combustion analyzer measures flue gas composition — typically oxygen, carbon monoxide, and stack temperature — to calculate combustion efficiency and confirm a gas or oil appliance is burning safely without producing dangerous carbon monoxide levels.
