What Is a General Purpose Hand Truck?
A hand truck (or dolly) is a wheeled frame with a nose plate and a vertical toe plate that tilts back to carry boxes, drums, appliances or equipment, letting one person move loads that would otherwise require a team lift. General purpose models are specified by load capacity, frame material (steel, aluminum, or reinforced plastic), and configuration — rigid single-purpose frames, folding frames for storage in a vehicle, or convertible units that switch between an upright hand truck and a flat four-wheel platform dolly.
Wheel selection affects both capacity and surface performance: solid rubber and polyurethane wheels resist punctures and suit warehouse/dock use, while pneumatic (air-filled) wheels cushion the load and roll more easily over gravel, grass, or uneven terrain at the cost of puncture risk. Nose plate depth and width should be matched to the typical load — a deeper nose plate supports drums and appliances better than a narrow, shallow one designed for boxes.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Load Capacity | 300 lb to 1,000+ lb typical | Exceeding rated capacity risks frame failure and tip-over injury |
| Frame Material | Steel, aluminum, reinforced plastic/nylon | Aluminum reduces weight for frequent lifting; steel suits heaviest duty use |
| Configuration | Rigid, folding, convertible (2-in-1 dolly) | Convertible units add flat-platform dolly mode for wide/flat loads |
| Wheel Type | Solid rubber, polyurethane, pneumatic | Pneumatic wheels cushion loads on rough terrain; solid wheels avoid flats |
| Nose Plate Size | Depth and width vary by model | Larger nose plates better support drums, appliances and irregular loads |

FAQ
General Purpose Hand Trucks Questions, Answered
What load capacity hand truck do I need?
Choose a hand truck rated comfortably above your heaviest typical load, not just the average — repeatedly loading a hand truck near its rated capacity accelerates wear on the frame, axle and wheels. Most warehouse and dock work is well served by 500-800 lb capacity models.
Should I choose pneumatic or solid rubber wheels?
Pneumatic (air-filled) wheels roll more smoothly and cushion the load over gravel, grass, ramps and uneven pavement but are vulnerable to punctures. Solid rubber or polyurethane wheels never go flat and are the better choice for warehouse floors, docks and paved surfaces where puncture risk from debris is a concern.
What's the advantage of a convertible hand truck?
A convertible hand truck folds from an upright two-wheel hand truck into a flat four-wheel platform dolly, letting one unit handle both tall stacked loads and wide, flat or irregularly shaped items that don't balance well against a standard toe plate.
How do stair-climbing hand trucks work?
Stair-climbing hand trucks use a tri-wheel or geared wheel cluster at each axle position that rotates around the step edge as the frame is tilted and pulled, letting the load 'walk' down or up stairs incrementally instead of requiring it to be carried.
Aluminum or steel frame — which should I choose?
Aluminum frames are lighter and easier to lift in and out of vehicles or up steps repeatedly, at a somewhat lower maximum capacity and price premium. Steel frames handle the highest capacities and heaviest daily use but add noticeable weight to the hand truck itself.
