What Is a Galvanized Pipe?
Galvanized pipe is standard carbon steel pipe coated with a layer of zinc, most commonly through hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123 or A153 for fittings, to protect the base steel from corrosion. The zinc coating sacrifices itself galvanically before the underlying steel rusts, extending service life in water, outdoor, and general MRO piping applications compared to bare black steel pipe.
Pipe is sized by nominal pipe size (NPS) and wall thickness schedule — Schedule 40 is standard wall for most water and general piping, while Schedule 80 is specified for higher pressure or where extra wall thickness is needed for threading strength. Threaded galvanized pipe uses NPT (National Pipe Thread) tapered threads that seal by metal-to-metal interference, typically with thread sealant or tape, distinct from the plain-end pipe used for welded or grooved-coupling connections.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coating Standard | ASTM A123 (pipe/tube), A153 (fittings) | Specifies minimum zinc coating weight for a given corrosion-resistance service life |
| Schedule (Wall Thickness) | Schedule 40, Schedule 80 | Higher schedule numbers mean thicker wall and higher pressure rating at a given NPS |
| Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) | 1/2in to 6in+ common | NPS is a nominal designation, not actual OD — always confirm against a pipe sizing chart |
| End Type | NPT threaded, plain end, grooved | Determines the connection method and what fittings or couplings are compatible |
| Pressure Rating | Schedule and size dependent per ASME B36.10 | Confirms the pipe is adequate for the system's maximum operating pressure |

Applications
Where Galvanized Pipe Get Used
Galvanized pipe is specified anywhere steel piping needs corrosion resistance beyond bare black steel, without the cost of stainless.
Water Distribution & Plumbing
Threaded galvanized pipe in potable and non-potable water lines where corrosion resistance extends service life over bare steel.
Fire Sprinkler Systems
Schedule 40 galvanized pipe specified in wet and dry sprinkler systems per NFPA 13 requirements.
Structural & Fence Framing
Galvanized pipe used as structural framing and fence rail in outdoor construction applications.
Agricultural & Irrigation Systems
Galvanized pipe runs for irrigation and livestock water distribution exposed to weather.
General Industrial & MRO Piping
Compressed air, low-pressure gas, and general utility piping runs in plants and facilities.
FAQ
Galvanized Pipe Questions, Answered
What's the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 galvanized pipe?
Schedule 80 has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 at the same nominal pipe size, giving it a higher pressure rating and more material for cutting deep NPT threads without weakening the pipe. Schedule 40 is standard for most general water and MRO piping.
Is galvanized pipe safe for potable water?
Older galvanized water piping can be a concern where zinc coatings contain lead or where scale buildup restricts flow over decades of service; consult current plumbing code and local water authority guidance before specifying it for new potable water installations, as many codes now favor copper or PEX for that use.
How is galvanized pipe sized — is NPS the actual diameter?
NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is a naming convention, not the actual outside diameter — a 1-inch NPS pipe has an OD larger than 1 inch. Always check a pipe sizing chart against your fittings and existing piping before ordering.
Can galvanized pipe be welded?
Welding galvanized pipe releases zinc fumes that are hazardous to inhale, requiring proper ventilation and respiratory protection, and welding burns off the zinc coating near the weld, requiring a cold-galvanizing repair compound to restore corrosion protection at the joint.
What thread sealant should I use on galvanized pipe fittings?
PTFE tape or a pipe-thread sealant compatible with the system's media (water, gas, air) is typically used on NPT threads to ensure a leak-tight seal; follow the sealant manufacturer's compatibility guidance for the specific service.
