What Is a Fuel and Lubricant Tubing?
Fuel and lubricant tubing must resist swelling, softening and chemical attack from petroleum-based fluids over long-term exposure, which standard general-purpose tubing (like plain PVC) does not — nitrile (Buna-N) rubber is the traditional standard for gasoline and oil resistance at moderate pressure and temperature, while PTFE tubing offers near-universal chemical resistance and higher temperature tolerance for fuel-injected and more demanding applications. Nylon and polyurethane tubing are common in pneumatic and hydraulic lubrication lines where their higher burst pressure and light weight suit push-to-connect fitting systems.
A less obvious but increasingly regulated spec is fuel permeation — hydrocarbon vapor slowly diffuses through standard rubber tubing walls over time, and EPA and CARB regulations on evaporative emissions have driven adoption of low-permeation multi-layer fuel tubing (often a fluoroelastomer or fluoropolymer barrier layer bonded to a rubber cover) in automotive and small-engine fuel systems. Pressure rating and ID/OD must be matched to the fitting system and the fluid system's operating pressure — a fuel line adequate for gravity-feed carbureted engines is undersized for a fuel-injected system's line pressure.

How do I size fuel tubing for a fuel-injected vs. carbureted engine?
Fuel-injected systems run substantially higher line pressure than gravity-feed carbureted systems, so the tubing's pressure rating (and its fitting/clamp system) must be sized for the injected system's actual operating pressure — reusing tubing rated for a low-pressure carbureted application on an injected system risks line failure under pressure.
Does ethanol-blended fuel affect tubing material selection?
Yes — ethanol is more chemically aggressive toward some rubber compounds than pure gasoline, and tubing not specifically rated for ethanol-blended fuel can degrade faster than expected. Confirm the tubing is rated for the actual fuel blend in use (E10, E15, E85, etc.) rather than assuming standard fuel-rated tubing automatically covers ethanol blends.
