What Is a Flange Alignment Tool?

Flange alignment tools are used by pipe fitters and millwrights to bring two mating flange faces into correct rotational and axial alignment — matching bolt holes and closing the gasket gap evenly — before bolts are installed and torqued. Tapered alignment pins are inserted into opposing bolt holes to pull the flanges into rough rotational alignment, while wedges and jack screws apply controlled force to close or adjust the gap between flange faces without over-stressing the pipe or connected equipment nozzle.

Correct alignment prevents installing bolts into a misaligned joint under strain, a common cause of gasket failure, flange face damage, and induced piping stress that can propagate to connected pump or vessel nozzles. Tool sizing must match the flange's actual bolt-circle diameter and bolt hole size for the pressure class and pipe size being joined — undersized pins can bend or shear under the forces involved in pulling a heavy flange into alignment.

Applications

Where Flange Alignment Tools Get Used

Flange alignment tools are specified anywhere two pipe flanges must be brought into correct alignment before bolt-up to avoid gasket failure or induced piping stress.

Pipeline & Process Piping Construction

Alignment pins and wedges used routinely during flange bolt-up on new piping installations.

Refinery & Petrochemical Turnarounds

Alignment tools used extensively during planned maintenance shutdowns to reconnect process piping.

Power Generation Plant Maintenance

Flange alignment tools used on steam, condensate and cooling water piping systems during outages.

Marine & Shipbuilding Piping

Alignment tools used for shipboard piping systems where space constraints make careful alignment critical.

Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants

Alignment tools used on large-diameter process piping during construction and maintenance work.

Industrial Fabrication Shops

Alignment tools used during shop fabrication and pre-assembly of piping spools before field installation.

FAQ

Flange Alignment Tools Questions, Answered

Why is proper flange alignment important before bolting?

Bolting a misaligned flange forces the joint into position using bolt torque alone, which can crush the gasket unevenly, damage the flange face, and induce ongoing stress into the pipe and connected equipment nozzles. Using alignment pins and wedges to correct alignment before bolt-up prevents these issues and reduces the risk of leaks or premature joint failure.

What size alignment pins do I need for my flange?

Pin size must match the flange's actual bolt hole diameter for its specific pressure class — bolt hole size increases with pressure class even at the same nominal pipe size, so always confirm the flange's ASME/ANSI class or metric PN rating rather than assuming based on pipe diameter alone.

When do I need jack screws or hydraulic wedges instead of simple alignment pins?

Simple tapered pins are generally sufficient for minor rotational misalignment on smaller flanges. Larger, heavier flanges, or situations with significant axial gap or misalignment, need the greater controlled force that jack screws or hydraulic wedges provide to safely close the gap without damaging the flange face or over-stressing the pipe.

Can flange alignment tools be used on flanges of different classes?

Only if the bolt hole size and bolt-circle diameter happen to match between the two flanges being joined — mixing flange classes at a single joint is generally not standard practice regardless of alignment tooling, since class ratings reflect different pressure and material requirements. Confirm both flanges are the same class before proceeding.

Do alignment pins get removed before or after bolts are installed?

Alignment pins are used to hold rough alignment while the first few bolts are installed by hand, then are progressively removed and replaced with bolts as the joint is drawn together — they are not left in place during final torquing since every bolt hole needs an actual bolt for the joint to be rated correctly.
