What Is a Filter Media Roll?
Filter media roll is continuous-length filtration material supplied on a roll rather than pre-cut into discrete panel filters, allowing facilities to cut custom lengths and widths to fit non-standard frame openings, paint booth racks, or high-volume filter change-out operations where buying panel filters in every custom size isn't practical. Media construction ranges from lofted fiberglass and polyester for general dust and particulate capture to pleated and activated carbon media for higher efficiency or odor/VOC applications.
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating quantifies particulate capture efficiency across a range of particle sizes under ASHRAE 52.2 test method, with higher MERV media capturing smaller particles at the cost of higher airflow resistance (pressure drop) across the filter. Paint booth applications use specialized media graded for progressive filtration — lower-efficiency intake media protects the booth's air makeup system, while higher-efficiency exhaust media captures overspray before it reaches the exhaust stack or is recirculated.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Media Type | Fiberglass, polyester, pleated synthetic, activated carbon | Determines filtration mechanism, dust holding capacity and suitability for the specific contaminant |
| MERV Rating | ASHRAE 52.2 rated efficiency, commonly MERV 4-13 for rolls | Higher MERV captures finer particles but increases pressure drop and reduces airflow at a given fan capacity |
| Roll Width & Thickness | Standard widths (e.g., 36 in., 72 in.), thickness 1-4 in. | Must match the frame or rack opening width and available filter housing depth |
| Application Type | General HVAC intake vs. paint booth intake/exhaust grade | Paint booth media is graded specifically for overspray capture, not general HVAC dust loading |
| Dust Holding Capacity | Total particulate mass captured before pressure drop rises unacceptably | Determines change-out frequency and total filtration cost per unit of airflow processed |

FAQ
Filter Media Rolls Questions, Answered
Why buy filter media on a roll instead of pre-cut panel filters?
Roll media lets a facility cut exact custom widths and lengths to fit non-standard frame openings or paint booth racks that don't match standard panel filter dimensions, and is typically more economical per square foot for high-volume filtration needs where large quantities are consumed on a recurring basis, like paint booth exhaust filtration.
What MERV rating do I need for my application?
MERV rating should be matched to both the particle size that needs to be captured and the airflow system's tolerance for pressure drop — general HVAC intake typically uses MERV 8-13, while paint booth pre-filtration for coarse overspray commonly uses lower MERV media as a first stage. Going to unnecessarily high MERV increases pressure drop and can reduce total airflow through the system if the fan wasn't sized to compensate.
What's the difference between paint booth intake and exhaust media?
Intake media filters incoming makeup air before it enters the booth, protecting the booth and its ventilation equipment from ambient dust, and is generally a lower-efficiency, higher-capacity media. Exhaust media captures paint overspray from the booth's exhaust airstream before it reaches the exhaust fan, ductwork, or stack, and is graded specifically for overspray particle capture and dust holding capacity rather than general ambient dust.
How do I know when to change roll-fed filter media?
Most facilities monitor pressure drop across the filter bank using a manometer or pressure gauge, replacing the media once pressure drop reaches a threshold indicating the media has loaded with enough particulate to meaningfully restrict airflow. Relying purely on visual inspection or a fixed time interval without pressure drop data risks either premature replacement or running an overloaded filter that reduces system airflow and efficiency.
Can standard fiberglass media handle activated-carbon-level odor or VOC control needs?
No — standard fiberglass and polyester media capture particulate matter through mechanical filtration but do not adsorb odors or VOCs. Activated carbon filter media is required specifically for odor and VOC control applications, since it works through a different adsorption mechanism entirely separate from particulate capture.
