What Is a Chain Link?

A connecting or master link joins two lengths of chain, or closes a chain into a loop, without requiring the chain to be pressed or riveted. For ANSI roller chain, this is typically a spring-clip or cotter-pin link matched exactly to the chain number (pitch and roller diameter); for grade 70/80/100 transport and lifting chain, cam-and-groove or hammerlock-style links are used because they carry a rated working load limit (WLL) that must match or exceed the chain's own rating.

A link is never stronger than its rated WLL, and mixing link grades with chain grades is a common and dangerous error — a grade 70 link on grade 80 chain de-rates the entire assembly to the weaker component. Roller chain master links additionally must match the chain's pitch and roller width precisely; an incorrect link will bind or wear the sprocket prematurely even if it happens to physically fit.
