What Is a Paint Applicator?
The right applicator depends on both the coating chemistry and the surface texture being finished. Natural (hog bristle) brushes hold up well with oil-based and solvent-borne paints because bristles don't swell or soften, while synthetic filament brushes (nylon, polyester or a blend) resist swelling in water and are the standard choice for latex and acrylic coatings. Roller nap length is selected against surface roughness: shorter naps (1/4 to 3/8 in.) lay down a smooth finish on drywall and trim, while longer naps (3/4 to 1-1/4 in.) load more material to bridge stucco, block or other textured substrates.
Airless spray tips are sized and labeled by a two- or three-digit fan/orifice code (e.g., 517), where the first digit(s) indicate the fan width in inches at a standard distance and the last two digits give the orifice diameter in thousandths of an inch — orifice size is matched to coating viscosity, with thinner stains and sealers needing a smaller orifice than heavier exterior latex or block fillers. Sprayer filters and screens are sized to the tip to catch particulates without excessively restricting flow.

Should I use a natural bristle or synthetic brush?
Natural bristle (hog hair) brushes hold their shape and release oil-based and solvent-borne coatings well but absorb water, which causes them to go limp and lose their edge in latex or acrylic paint. Synthetic filament brushes (nylon, polyester or a blend) resist water absorption and are the standard recommendation for any water-based coating, and most also perform acceptably with oil-based paints.
How do I choose the right roller nap length?
Nap length should scale with surface texture: 1/4 to 3/8 in. nap for smooth drywall, trim and doors; 3/8 to 1/2 in. for lightly textured walls; and 3/4 in. to 1-1/4 in. for rough or heavily textured surfaces like stucco, brick or concrete block. A nap too short won't load enough paint to fill surface texture, while one too long can leave excess stipple on a smooth surface.
What does an airless spray tip number like 517 mean?
The number is typically read as two parts: the first one or two digits (5, giving 10 when doubled) indicate the fan width in inches at roughly a 12-inch spray distance, and the last two digits (17) give the orifice diameter in thousandths of an inch — here 0.017 in. Smaller orifices suit thinner coatings like stains and sealers; larger orifices are needed for thicker coatings like exterior latex or block fillers.
Why does my roller frame not fit a different brand's cover?
Roller frames and covers are generally standardized to a common inside-diameter core and cage design, but wire diameter and cage style can vary enough between manufacturers to cause loose or tight fits. Extension poles and frames also use a standard Acme-threaded tip, so mismatched thread types (rare, but present on some specialty poles) are the more common compatibility issue.
How often should sprayer filters be replaced or cleaned?
Filters and tip screens should be checked whenever spray pattern quality drops — streaking, tailing or an uneven fan pattern usually indicates a partially clogged screen. For continuous production spraying, filters are typically cleaned or swapped daily or between coating changes, since dried material buildup restricts flow and can eventually force material past the filter unfiltered.
