What Is a Bronze Blanks, Flats, Bars, Plates and Sheet Stock?
Bronze is a copper alloy family — primarily copper-tin (phosphor bronze), copper-tin-lead (bearing bronze) and copper-aluminum (aluminum bronze) — valued for a low coefficient of friction against steel shafts, good corrosion resistance, and machinability. Bearing bronze grades like C93200 (SAE 660) are the default choice for bushings and thrust washers because the alloy's leaded microstructure provides self-lubricating properties even under marginal lubrication conditions.
Stock is supplied as continuous-cast or centrifugally-cast round bar (for machined bushings), hot-rolled flat bar and plate (for wear strips and structural bronze components), and rolled sheet (for gaskets, shim stock and thin wear plates). Continuous-cast bar has a denser, more uniform grain structure than sand-cast bronze and machines more predictably, which is why most bushing stock specifies continuous-cast C93200 rather than a sand-cast equivalent.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy Grade | C93200 (SAE 660), C95400, C51000 phosphor bronze | Determines bearing load capacity, corrosion resistance and machinability |
| Casting Method | Continuous-cast vs. centrifugally-cast bar | Continuous-cast gives more uniform grain structure for consistent machining |
| Form | Round bar, flat bar, plate, sheet | Round bar for machined bushings; flat/plate for wear strips; sheet for gaskets and shims |
| Temper (sheet/flat) | Soft (annealed) vs. hard-rolled | Affects formability and spring-back when the material must be bent or stamped |
| Dimensional Tolerance | ASTM B505 (castings), ASTM B103 (rolled) | Sets allowable size and roundness deviation for close-fit bushing applications |

FAQ
Bronze Blanks, Flats, Bars, Plates and Sheet Stock Questions, Answered
What's the difference between C93200 and C95400 bronze?
C93200 (SAE 660) is a copper-tin-lead bearing bronze optimized for bushings and thrust washers — the leaded microstructure gives it self-lubricating properties under marginal lubrication. C95400 is an aluminum bronze with higher strength and better corrosion and wear resistance but poorer bearing (anti-galling) characteristics, making it better suited to structural wear plates and marine hardware than to plain bushings.
Why does continuous-cast bar cost more than sand-cast, and is it worth it?
Continuous-cast bronze bar has a denser, more uniform grain structure with fewer internal voids than sand-cast bar, which machines more predictably and gives more consistent bearing performance across the length of the bar. For precision bushings and thrust washers it's the standard choice; for large, low-precision castings sand-cast bronze remains common and cheaper.
Can bronze bar be used without any lubrication?
Leaded bearing bronzes like C93200 can tolerate brief periods of marginal or interrupted lubrication because the lead phase migrates to the bearing surface and provides some self-lubrication, but they are not intended to run fully dry under continuous load — sustained dry running will still gall and wear the bushing prematurely.
What temper should I order for bronze sheet I need to bend or stamp?
Soft (annealed) temper sheet is easier to form without cracking and is the right choice for gaskets, shims and parts requiring tight bend radii. Hard-rolled sheet holds a flatter, stiffer shape and is preferred for spring contacts and applications where the part must retain spring-back after forming.
How do I size a bronze bushing blank for machining?
Order round bar with enough stock allowance over the finished OD and ID to true up the bore and outside diameter after turning — typically 0.030–0.060 inch per side for continuous-cast bar — and confirm the alloy's ASTM B505 dimensional tolerance class so the as-cast bar diameter is within your lathe's chucking capability.
