What Is a Washdown Motor?

A washdown motor is an electric motor built specifically to survive repeated high-pressure water and caustic chemical cleaning cycles without water intrusion or corrosion, using a combination of stainless steel or epoxy-coated cast iron construction, sealed shaft seals, drain holes positioned to shed water, and smooth exterior surfaces without ledges where bacteria or residue could collect. Standard TEFC motors are not designed for this exposure — their paint and shaft seals degrade under repeated high-pressure spray and caustic wash chemicals, leading to premature bearing and winding failure.

Enclosure ratings (IP66 and IP69K under IEC 60529) quantify washdown resistance: IP66 rates protection against powerful water jets from any direction, while IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature close-range spray specifically used in food and pharmaceutical sanitation protocols. Material choice also matters beyond the enclosure rating — stainless steel construction resists corrosion from caustic and acidic cleaning chemicals better than epoxy-coated cast iron, which is why food and pharmaceutical processing typically specifies stainless even where an epoxy-coated motor would meet the same IP rating.

Applications

Where Washdown Motors Get Used

Washdown motors are specified wherever equipment is subject to routine high-pressure water or chemical cleaning that would corrode or fail a standard TEFC motor.

Food & Beverage Processing

Stainless steel IP69K motors on conveyors, mixers, and pumps subject to daily high-pressure caustic washdown.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Washdown motors meeting sanitary design requirements on equipment requiring frequent sanitization between batches.

Meat & Poultry Processing

IP69K rated motors withstanding hot, high-pressure spray and chemical exposure in USDA-regulated processing environments.

Dairy Processing

Stainless washdown motors on pumps and agitators in facilities with daily clean-in-place and washdown protocols.

Outdoor & Marine Equipment

Epoxy-coated or stainless washdown motors protecting against weather exposure and saltwater corrosion.

Wastewater & Water Treatment

FAQ

Washdown Motors Questions, Answered

What's the difference between IP66 and IP69K ratings?

IP66 rates a motor as protected against powerful water jets from any direction at standard pressure, suitable for general washdown environments. IP69K adds protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water at close range, the specific test condition used to simulate food and pharmaceutical sanitation spray procedures — a motor rated only IP66 is not guaranteed to survive the closer-range, hotter, higher-pressure spray an IP69K rating covers.

Should I choose stainless steel or epoxy-coated washdown motors?

Stainless steel construction resists corrosion from caustic and acidic cleaning chemicals over the long term better than an epoxy coating, which can eventually chip or wear through with repeated contact and abrasive cleaning. Epoxy-coated cast iron motors cost less and are adequate for less chemically aggressive washdown environments; food, pharmaceutical, and other highly regulated sanitary environments typically specify stainless as standard.

Can a standard TEFC motor be used in a washdown application if it's protected with a cover?

A cover reduces but doesn't eliminate exposure, and standard TEFC motors lack the sealed shaft seals, drainage features, and corrosion-resistant coatings that washdown motors are specifically designed with — using one in a routine washdown environment typically leads to premature bearing failure and winding damage from water intrusion. A properly rated washdown motor is the reliable solution rather than trying to shield a standard motor.

What is an inverter-duty washdown motor and when do I need one?

An inverter-duty motor has windings and insulation rated to handle the voltage spikes and additional heating that come from variable frequency drive (VFD) operation, in addition to the washdown-rated enclosure and materials. If the motor will be speed-controlled by a VFD in a washdown environment, both the washdown rating and inverter-duty rating need to be specified together — a washdown motor not rated for inverter duty can suffer insulation failure under VFD operation.

Why do washdown motors have drain holes, and does their placement matter?

Drain holes let any water that does penetrate the motor housing escape rather than pooling internally and corroding windings or bearings, and their placement (typically at the lowest point in the motor's mounted orientation) is designed around how the motor will actually be installed. Installing a washdown motor in an orientation different from its designed mounting position can defeat the drain hole placement and trap water instead of shedding it.
