What Is a Ducting Hose?
Ducting hose moves air, dust, fumes or exhaust between a source and a collection or exhaust point, and is specified primarily by the material being conveyed and the temperature it will see, not by diameter alone. What temperature rating do I need for welding fume or exhaust extraction hose?
Confirm the actual temperature of the source air at the hose's inlet, not just the ambient shop temperature — welding fume and engine exhaust can run well above standard PVC ducting's roughly 150-160F rating, requiring silicone, neoprene or metal-reinforced hose rated to the higher temperatures actually seen at the capture point.
What's the difference between smooth-bore and wire helix ducting hose?
Wire helix (wire-reinforced) ducting hose has a spiral wire embedded in or wrapped around the hose wall, giving it resistance to crushing and kinking, especially useful when the hose is routed around obstructions or subjected to vacuum. Smooth-bore hose without reinforcement is lighter and often has slightly better airflow characteristics but is more prone to collapsing under vacuum or tight bends.
Can standard PVC ducting hose handle abrasive dust like sand or metal shavings?
Standard clean-air PVC ducting isn't built for sustained abrasive wear and can fail prematurely when conveying sand, metal shavings or aggregate dust.
