What Is a Wire Mesh Sling?

A wire mesh sling is a rigging sling woven from interlocking steel wire loops into a flat mesh fabric, edged with steel selvage wire and terminated with metal fittings — offering resistance to cutting, abrasion and heat that synthetic web or round slings cannot survive. The woven construction distributes load across many individual wire loops, so localized wire damage reduces capacity gradually rather than causing sudden catastrophic failure, unlike a single-strand wire rope sling.

Duty class (standard vs. heavy duty) and material (carbon steel vs. stainless) are selected for the load's edge sharpness, ambient temperature and corrosion exposure — stainless mesh slings are specified for high-heat forging and foundry work as well as corrosive or washdown environments where carbon steel would rust. Working load limit is stamped on a sling tag per ASME B30.9 and must never be exceeded, with the sling rated differently depending on hitch configuration (vertical, choker, basket).

Why use a wire mesh sling instead of a synthetic web sling?

Wire mesh resists cutting from sharp edges, withstands much higher temperatures than synthetic fiber (which can melt or char), and tolerates abrasive load surfaces that would quickly wear through webbing. Synthetic slings remain lighter and less expensive for smooth, room-temperature loads without sharp edges.

How is the working load limit of a wire mesh sling determined?

WLL is established per ASME B30.9 based on the sling's width, wire gauge and weave, and is stamped on a permanently attached tag. Critically, the same sling has different rated capacities depending on hitch configuration — vertical, choker or basket — so the correct rating must be read for how the sling is actually rigged, not just its tag maximum.

When should I choose stainless steel over carbon steel mesh slings?

Stainless is specified for high-heat environments like forging and foundry work where carbon steel would lose temper strength, and for corrosive or washdown environments where carbon steel would rust. Carbon steel mesh slings are more economical for general-purpose rigging without those exposures.

How do I inspect a wire mesh sling for wear or damage?

Check for broken wires in the mesh weave, crushed or flattened sections, cuts in the selvage edge wire, and deformation or wear at the end fittings. Per ASME B30.9, a sling with a certain number of broken wires in a given area, or with damaged fittings, must be removed from service.

What's the difference between flat eye and triangle end fittings?

Flat eye fittings are a simple loop for direct hook or shackle attachment, while triangle fittings provide a wider bearing surface and are often paired with a choker fitting on the opposite end for choker hitch configurations.
