What Is a Analog Panel Meter?
An analog panel meter uses a moving-coil or moving-iron mechanism to deflect a needle proportional to the measured electrical quantity, giving an at-a-glance reading without the response lag or power requirement of a digital display. They remain standard on switchgear, generator control panels and motor control centers where operators need a continuous, easily-glanced trend indication rather than a precise numeric readout.
Meters are specified by measurement type (voltage, current, frequency), range, and whether they read AC or DC — AC ammeters above a few amps require an external current transformer (CT) rather than being wired directly in-line, while DC ammeters at high current use a shunt resistor. Panel cutout size follows standardized dimensions (commonly 96x96mm or 72x72mm square, or various round diameters) so a replacement meter fits an existing panel opening without re-cutting.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement Type | Voltage, current, frequency | Determines which internal movement and scale calibration the meter uses |
| Range | Application-specific, e.g. 0-300V, 0-100A | Meter range must match expected system operating range for readable, accurate deflection |
| AC or DC | AC (line frequency) vs. DC | AC meters use a different movement/rectification than DC meters — not interchangeable |
| Current Sensing Method | Direct-wired, CT-operated, or shunt-operated | High-current AC uses a CT; high-current DC uses a shunt — direct wiring is only for low-current ranges |
| Panel Cutout Size | Standard sizes, e.g. 96x96mm, 72x72mm, round | Must match the existing panel cutout for a drop-in replacement without re-machining the panel |

FAQ
Analog Panel Meters Questions, Answered
Do I need a current transformer (CT) for my analog ammeter?
Direct-wired ammeters are only practical for low current ranges (typically a few amps or less); above that, an external current transformer (CT) steps the line current down to a standard secondary range (commonly 5A) that the meter is calibrated to read. Confirm whether your meter is direct-wired or CT-operated before selecting the matching CT ratio.
What's the difference between edgewise and round analog panel meters?
Edgewise meters have a rectangular, narrow-profile scale designed to be mounted in a row alongside other meters on a panel, saving horizontal space. Round meters have a traditional circular dial and are typically used as a standalone gauge or where the panel design calls for a round cutout.
Can I replace an AC panel meter with a DC one, or vice versa?
No, AC and DC analog meters use different internal movements and scale calibrations and are not interchangeable. Confirm whether your system is measuring AC (line frequency) or DC power before ordering a replacement meter.
How do I match the panel cutout size for a replacement meter?
Measure the existing panel cutout dimensions (common standard sizes include 96x96mm and 72x72mm square, plus various round diameters) and match the replacement meter's mounting/bezel dimensions to avoid re-cutting the panel. Always verify the exact cutout spec against the meter manufacturer's datasheet, since sizes can vary slightly between brands.
Why choose an analog meter over a digital panel meter?
Analog meters give an intuitive, at-a-glance trend reading (is the needle rising, falling, steady) that many operators find faster to interpret for continuous monitoring than reading a changing digital number. Digital meters offer higher precision and additional features like data logging, but analog remains preferred on legacy panels and where quick visual trend monitoring matters more than exact numeric precision.
