What Is a Wheel Dolly?
A wheel dolly (or wheel skate) is a low-profile, caster-wheeled platform that lifts and cradles one wheel of a vehicle, trailer, or piece of equipment off the ground, allowing the unit to be rolled sideways or maneuvered without a running engine or drivetrain engagement. Hydraulic wheel dollies use a foot-pump ram to lift the tire into the cradle, while manual ratchet or lever-actuated dollies use mechanical leverage — hydraulic units generally lift heavier loads with less operator effort.
Per-dolly load capacity and the tire width range the cradle can accept are the two specs that determine fit — a dolly's rated capacity assumes the vehicle's weight is evenly distributed across a full four-dolly set, so capacity should be checked against actual per-corner weight (which is rarely exactly a quarter of total vehicle weight) rather than dividing total vehicle weight evenly by four.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Load Capacity (per dolly) | Common ratings 1,500-5,000+ lb per unit | Check against actual per-corner weight distribution, not just total vehicle weight divided by four |
| Lift Mechanism | Hydraulic foot pump, manual ratchet/lever | Hydraulic units lift heavier loads with less operator effort; manual units are simpler and lower cost |
| Tire Width Range | Adjustable cradle width, e.g. 4-9 in | Cradle must accommodate the actual tire width without the tire rocking loose during movement |
| Caster Wheel Type | Polyurethane, rubber; swivel or fixed | Swivel casters allow full directional maneuvering; polyurethane resists flat-spotting under sustained load |
| Set Configuration | Sold individually or as matched 2-pack/4-pack sets | A full 4-dolly set is required to fully lift and move a vehicle; matched sets ensure consistent capacity across all four |

FAQ
Wheel Dolly Questions, Answered
How do I determine what load capacity I need per dolly?
Don't just divide total vehicle weight by four — actual per-corner weight distribution varies with engine placement, fuel load and cargo, and front-heavy vehicles can put significantly more load on the front two dollies. Check manufacturer per-axle weight specifications where available, and size with margin above the calculated per-corner load.
Do I need hydraulic or manual wheel dollies?
Hydraulic dollies use a foot-pump ram to lift the tire into the cradle with minimal operator effort, better suited to heavier vehicles or frequent daily use. Manual ratchet or lever dollies are simpler, generally lower cost, and adequate for lighter vehicles or occasional use where the extra lifting effort isn't a significant concern.
Can wheel dollies be used on an incline or uneven floor?
Most wheel dollies are designed for use on a flat, level, hard surface — using them on an incline or uneven floor risks the vehicle rolling unexpectedly once lifted onto the caster wheels, since the parking brake and drivetrain are no longer holding the vehicle in place. Always use wheel chocks as a backup on any surface that isn't perfectly level.
What tire width range do I need to check before ordering?
Confirm the dolly cradle's adjustable width range covers your actual tire's width with a snug fit — a cradle too wide for the tire allows it to rock or shift during movement, increasing tip risk, while a cradle too narrow simply won't accept the tire at all.
Can I use a car wheel dolly set for a small trailer?
Only if the dolly's rated capacity and cradle width match the trailer's actual per-wheel weight and tire size — many trailers have narrower or differently sized tires than passenger vehicles, and improperly rated trailer weight can exceed what a standard car-rated dolly set is designed to support. Trailer-specific dolly sets are available and recommended for heavier trailers.
