What Is a Temperature And Humidity Transducer?
A temperature and humidity transducer converts sensed relative humidity (RH) and temperature into a proportional electrical signal — commonly 4-20mA current loop, 0-10V voltage, or a digital protocol (Modbus, BACnet) — that a building automation system, PLC, or data logger can read. The sensing element (capacitive polymer for RH, thermistor or RTD for temperature) is exposed to the monitored air through a protective filter cap while the transmitter electronics are housed in a wall, duct, or outdoor-rated enclosure.
Accuracy is specified separately for RH (commonly ±2% to ±3% RH for standard-grade units, tighter for precision-grade) and temperature (commonly ±0.3°C to ±0.5°C), and should be selected based on the control or monitoring tolerance required by the application — cleanroom and pharmaceutical environments typically demand tighter accuracy than general HVAC comfort control. Mounting style must match the installation: duct-mount units include an insertion probe for airstream sensing, while outdoor units add a solar/rain shield and a wider operating temperature range.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output Signal | 4-20mA, 0-10V, 0-5V, Modbus/BACnet digital | Must match the controller or BMS input type it's connecting to |
| RH Accuracy | Typically ±2% to ±3% RH standard; ±1% RH precision grade | Tighter accuracy required for critical environments like cleanrooms or labs |
| Temperature Accuracy | Typically ±0.3°C to ±0.5°C | Determines how tightly the connected control system can hold setpoint |
| Mounting Style | Wall, duct (with insertion probe), outdoor | Duct/outdoor styles need physical hardware (probe length, weather shield) matched to install location |
| Operating Range | Standard indoor vs. extended outdoor range | Outdoor and extreme-environment applications need a transducer rated for the full ambient swing |

FAQ
Temperature And Humidity Transducers Questions, Answered
What output signal do I need — 4-20mA, 0-10V, or digital?
The output signal must match the input type accepted by your controller, PLC, or building automation system — 4-20mA current loop is common for longer wire runs due to its noise immunity, while 0-10V is common in shorter HVAC control runs. Digital protocols like Modbus or BACnet are used when integrating directly into a networked BMS. Confirm your controller's accepted input type before ordering.
How accurate does my humidity transducer need to be?
Standard-grade transducers (±2-3% RH) are adequate for general HVAC comfort control, while critical environments like cleanrooms, pharmaceutical storage, or data centers often specify precision-grade sensors (±1-2% RH) to hold tighter tolerances. Check your application's required control or monitoring tolerance against the transducer's published accuracy spec.
Can I use a wall-mount transducer to measure duct air temperature and humidity?
No — duct-mount transducers include an insertion probe designed to sense conditions directly within the moving airstream, while wall-mount units are designed for open room air. Using a wall-mount unit inside a duct will not give a representative reading and may not physically fit or seal the duct penetration correctly.
Do humidity sensors need periodic recalibration?
Capacitive RH sensing elements can drift over time, particularly with exposure to contaminants, condensation, or extreme humidity swings, so many facilities calibrate or verify transducers on a periodic schedule, especially in regulated or critical environments. Check the manufacturer's recommended calibration interval for your specific model.
What's different about an outdoor-rated transducer?
Outdoor transducers add a weatherproof enclosure with a solar/rain shield to prevent direct sun and precipitation from affecting the reading, along with a wider rated operating temperature range to handle seasonal extremes. A standard indoor transducer installed outdoors may read inaccurately or fail prematurely from moisture ingress.
