What Is a Structural Framing System Accessorie?
Structural framing system accessories are the fittings and hardware that connect, terminate and load-rate slotted steel channel (commonly known by the trade name Unistrut) into structural and support assemblies — brackets and splice plates for joining channel sections at angles or in-line, channel nuts and spring nuts that slide into the channel slot to accept a standard bolt without drilling, and end caps that close exposed channel ends for safety and to prevent debris ingress.
Channel size (most commonly 13/16in shallow or 1-5/8in standard depth) determines which nuts, brackets and clamps fit, and load ratings for any assembled structure depend on both the channel gauge/finish and the specific fitting's rated capacity — a framing system's overall capacity is governed by its weakest connected component, not the channel alone. Finish (electrogalvanized for indoor/dry use, hot-dip galvanized or stainless for outdoor/corrosive environments) should match the same exposure class across channel and fittings to avoid galvanic mismatch and premature corrosion at the joint.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Channel Size | 13/16in (shallow) or 1-5/8in (standard) depth | Nuts, brackets and clamps are sized to a specific channel depth and won't seat correctly in the wrong one |
| Nut Type | Regular spring nut vs. short spring nut vs. channel nut | Spring nuts allow tool-free positioning anywhere along the channel slot; determines assembly speed and adjustability |
| Load Rating | Stamped per-fitting rated capacity (varies by bracket/clamp type) | Assembly capacity is set by the lowest-rated connected component, not the channel's rating alone |
| Finish | Electrogalvanized, hot-dip galvanized, stainless steel, PVC-coated | Must match the exposure environment and the channel's own finish to avoid galvanic corrosion at the joint |
| Fitting Function | Bracket, splice plate, beam clamp, pipe clamp, end cap | Determines whether the fitting joins channel-to-channel, channel-to-structure, or terminates/closes the channel |

FAQ
Structural Framing System Accessories Questions, Answered
What's the difference between 13/16in and 1-5/8in strut channel, and does it matter for fittings?
1-5/8in is the standard depth channel used for most structural support applications and has the widest range of available fittings; 13/16in shallow channel is used where space is limited and generally carries lower load ratings. Nuts, brackets and clamps are sized to one specific channel depth, so fittings are not interchangeable between the two without an adapter.
How does a spring nut work, and why use it instead of a regular nut?
A spring nut is spring-loaded so it can be compressed, inserted into the channel's slot opening, and released to seat against the channel's inner lip at any point along its length — this lets you position a bolted connection anywhere without needing to slide a nut in from the channel end or drill a hole. This is the core advantage of strut framing: field-adjustable connections without cutting or welding.
How do I determine the load rating of an assembled framing structure?
The overall capacity of a framed assembly is limited by whichever component — channel gauge, bracket, clamp or nut — has the lowest rated capacity in that specific load path, not by the channel's rating alone. Manufacturers publish load tables for channel spans and for individual fittings; both need to be checked against the actual support span and load.
What finish should I choose for outdoor or wet-location framing?
Hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel channel and fittings are standard for outdoor, wet, or corrosive environments, while electrogalvanized (a thinner, cosmetic zinc coating) is typically reserved for indoor, dry applications. Mixing finishes — for example, stainless fittings on electrogalvanized channel — can accelerate galvanic corrosion at the contact point in a humid or wet environment.
Can strut channel framing be used for structural (load-bearing) support, or only for light equipment mounting?
Strut channel is rated and commonly used for real structural support — cable tray, conduit, ductwork and mechanical equipment — provided the specific channel gauge, span and fittings are selected against the manufacturer's published load tables for the intended load and span. It is not a substitute for structural steel framing outside its rated load range.
