What Is a Submersible Pump Cable?
Submersible pump cable is a jacketed multi-conductor cable engineered to remain continuously submerged in water without degradation of the conductor insulation or jacket. Unlike general-purpose SOOW cord, submersible cable uses a water-blocking compound around the conductors and a jacket compound (typically a thermoplastic elastomer or PVC blend) specifically rated for full immersion service, so moisture cannot wick along the conductor strands into the pump's motor housing over years of service.
Cable is sold in flat and round profiles: flat cable is common on 2-wire and 3-wire well pump drops because it fits more easily inside a narrow well casing alongside the drop pipe, while round cable (SOOW/SJOOW-style) is typical on sewage ejector and sump pumps where the cable exits through a wider basin lid. Conductor count must match the pump's motor wiring — 2-wire and 3-wire single-phase pumps, or 3-wire plus ground for three-phase — and AWG size must be selected for the total drop length to keep voltage drop within the motor's tolerance.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Conductor Count | 2-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire (with ground) | Must match the pump motor's wiring configuration — single-phase vs. three-phase |
| AWG Size | 14, 12, 10, 8 AWG stranded copper | Sized to total drop length and pump amperage to hold voltage drop within motor tolerance |
| Jacket Type | Flat PVC/TPE jacket, round SOOW/SJOOW jacket | Flat suits narrow well casings; round suits wider sump/sewage basin openings |
| Voltage Rating | 600V typical | Matches standard single- and three-phase pump motor supply voltages |
| Submersion Rating | Continuous submersion, water-blocked core | Prevents wicking moisture from reaching motor terminals and causing insulation breakdown |

FAQ
Submersible Pump Cable Questions, Answered
What's the difference between submersible pump cable and regular SOOW cord?
Submersible pump cable uses a water-blocking compound packed around the conductor strands and a jacket compound specifically formulated for continuous full immersion, preventing water from wicking along the copper strands into the motor housing over time. Regular SOOW cord is water-resistant for splash and occasional wet contact but is not rated for the years of continuous submersion a well or sewage pump drop cable must withstand.
How do I choose the right AWG size for my well pump drop?
AWG size depends on both the pump motor's amperage draw and the total cable run length — longer drops need a heavier gauge to keep voltage drop within the motor's rated tolerance, since excessive voltage drop causes overheating and premature motor failure. Check the pump manufacturer's wire sizing chart against your well depth before ordering, rather than matching only the existing cable's gauge.
Should I choose flat or round submersible cable?
Flat cable is the standard choice for 2-wire and 3-wire well pump drops because its narrow profile fits alongside the drop pipe inside a well casing with minimal clearance. Round cable (SOOW/SJOOW-style) is more common on sewage and sump pumps, where the cable exits through a wider sealed basin lid grommet rather than down a narrow casing.
How many conductors do I need for my pump?
Single-phase 2-wire pumps (with the motor's ground running separately or through the pipe) use 2-conductor cable, most single-phase pumps with a separate ground use 3-conductor cable, and three-phase pumps need 3 conductors plus a ground, typically supplied as 4-conductor cable. Confirm the exact wiring configuration on the pump's nameplate or control box before ordering.
Can submersible pump cable be spliced, and how is that done safely?
Yes — submersible splice kits use heat-shrink or epoxy-filled connectors specifically designed to maintain a watertight seal at the splice point, since a standard wire nut or electrical tape splice will fail once submerged. Splices should be kept to a minimum and located above the pump housing where possible, using a kit rated for the same continuous submersion service as the cable itself.
