What Is a Stir Bar?

A magnetic stir bar is a small rotor, typically a magnet fully encapsulated in an inert PTFE (Teflon) shell, dropped into a vessel and spun by a rotating magnetic field from a stir plate beneath it. The PTFE coating resists attack from acids, bases and most organic solvents, while the encapsulated magnet provides the torque needed to keep the bar tracking the plate's field without flipping out at higher speeds.

Shape is chosen for the mixing task: octagonal bars give the most consistent stirring action for general lab use, cylindrical bars offer lower drag for gentle mixing, cross and star shapes maximize contact area in shallow dishes, and triangular bars are used in round-bottom flasks where a flat bottom bar would ride poorly. Bar length should be roughly 60-70% of the vessel's internal diameter for stable tracking.

What size stir bar should I use for my flask?

As a rule of thumb, the bar length should be about 60-70% of the vessel's internal diameter at the point where the bar will rest. Too short and the bar won't track the stir plate's field reliably at speed; too long and it will strike the vessel walls or bottom curvature in a round-bottom flask.

What's the difference between octagonal and cylindrical stir bars?

Octagonal bars have flat facets that create more turbulence and give more consistent stirring performance across a range of speeds, making them the default choice for general lab use. Cylindrical bars have lower drag and spin more smoothly, which suits gentler, lower-speed mixing where minimizing vortex or splash is important.

Can PTFE stir bars be used with strong acids or organic solvents?

Yes — PTFE is chemically inert to nearly all acids, bases and organic solvents encountered in a typical lab, which is why it's the standard coating. The main limits are temperature (most PTFE bars are rated to roughly 250-270°C) and mechanical wear from prolonged high-speed use against glass, which can eventually expose the internal magnet.

What is a stir bar retriever used for?

A stir bar retriever is a PTFE-coated rod with a magnetic tip used to lift a stir bar out of a vessel without reaching in with tweezers or tipping the flask, which is especially useful for narrow-neck flasks or when the contents are hazardous.

Why won't my stir bar spin evenly?

Uneven spinning is usually caused by a bar that's undersized for the vessel, a vessel bottom that isn't flat or centered over the stir plate's magnet, or a bar with a worn/chipped coating that has become slightly unbalanced. Switching to a properly sized bar and centering the vessel over the plate resolves most cases.
