What Is a Steel Strapping?

Steel strapping is a high-strength banding material tensioned and sealed around a load to secure it for shipping, storage, or bundling, offering far higher break strength and lower elongation than plastic strapping, which matters for heavy, rigid, or sharp-edged loads that would cut through or stretch a polyester or polypropylene strap. Two grades dominate: regular-duty strapping for general bundling, and high-tensile strapping (cold-rolled and heat-treated) for heavier, higher-stress applications like steel coil or lumber bundling.

Strap width and thickness are selected together to hit a target break strength, not independently — a wider strap at the same thickness increases break strength roughly proportionally, while thickness has a larger effect on stiffness and seal-joint efficiency. Seals (crimped or notched) must be matched to strap width and type, and the tensioning/sealing tool (manual, pneumatic, or battery) must be rated for the strap grade being applied, since high-tensile strap requires more tensioning force than regular-duty.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Strap GradeRegular-duty vs. high-tensile (heat-treated)High-tensile strap achieves higher break strength at the same width/thickness for heavy loads
Width & ThicknessCommon widths 1/2– 2 in, thickness .015–.050 inSelected together to hit a target break strength — not interchangeable independently
Break StrengthRated tensile load before strap failureMust exceed the load's securement requirement with an appropriate safety margin
FinishBright (uncoated), painted, or waxedPainted/waxed finishes resist corrosion and reduce friction through the tensioning tool during export shipping
Seal TypePush-type or wrap-around seals, matched to widthImproperly matched seals reduce joint efficiency and can fail below the strap's rated strength

Applications

Where Steel Strapping Get Used

Steel strapping is specified anywhere a load is too heavy, rigid, or sharp-edged for plastic strapping to safely secure.

Steel & Metals Coil Bundling

High-tensile strapping securing coiled steel, wire, and metal products against shifting during transport.

Lumber & Building Products

Steel strapping bundling dimensional lumber and panel products for yard storage and shipping.

Export Crating & Heavy Machinery

High break-strength strapping securing crated machinery and equipment for ocean freight shipping.

Brick & Masonry Product Bundling

Regular and high-tensile strapping bundling palletized brick, block and masonry units for distribution.

Recycling & Scrap Baling

Heavy-duty steel strapping securing baled scrap metal, paper, and recyclable materials for transport.

Construction Material Palletizing

Steel strapping securing rebar, structural steel, and other rigid construction materials to pallets.

FAQ

Steel Strapping Questions, Answered

When should I use steel strapping instead of plastic (polyester/polypropylene) strapping?

Steel strapping is specified for heavy, rigid, or sharp-edged loads — steel coil, lumber, brick, and machinery — where the load's weight or edges would cut through or overstretch plastic strap. Plastic strapping is generally preferred for lighter, more elastic loads and palletized cartons where steel's rigidity and recoil hazard aren't necessary.

What's the difference between regular-duty and high-tensile steel strapping?

High-tensile strapping is cold-rolled and heat-treated to achieve significantly higher break strength at the same width and thickness as regular-duty strap, making it suitable for heavier loads like steel coil bundling. Regular-duty strapping costs less and suits general bundling where the higher strength of high-tensile strap isn't needed.

How do I match seals and tensioning tools to my strapping?

Seals must be sized to the exact strap width being used — an oversized or undersized seal reduces joint efficiency and can fail well below the strap's rated break strength. Tensioning and sealing tools should be rated for the strap grade in use, since high-tensile strap requires more tensioning force than regular-duty strap and an underrated tool may not achieve proper tension.

Is steel strapping dangerous to cut or remove?

Yes — tensioned steel strapping stores significant energy and can recoil sharply and cause injury if cut improperly. Always use proper strap cutters (not general cutting tools), cut from the side rather than directly in front of the strap, and wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection when removing tensioned steel strapping.

Does steel strapping need a protective finish for outdoor or export shipping?

For long-distance export shipping or outdoor storage, painted or waxed steel strapping resists corrosion better than bright (uncoated) strap and reduces friction through the tensioning tool. Bright strap is generally adequate for domestic shipping and short-term indoor use where corrosion exposure is minimal.
