What Is a Stainless Steel Rod Stock?
Stainless steel rod stock is round bar used as raw material for machining, turning and fabricating components requiring corrosion resistance, and grade selection drives both machinability and end-use performance. 304 and 304L (a lower-carbon variant resisting carbide precipitation during welding) are the general-purpose austenitic grades, offering good corrosion resistance and formability at moderate cost, while 316/316L add molybdenum for materially better resistance to chlorides and marine/chemical environments where 304 would pit or corrode over time.
303 is a free-machining austenitic grade with added sulfur, specified specifically for high-volume CNC turning where machinability outweighs the slightly reduced corrosion resistance and weldability versus 304. 17-4PH is a precipitation-hardening martensitic grade that can be heat-treated after machining to significantly higher strength and hardness than the austenitic grades, used where both corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength are required, such as aerospace and high-performance fastener applications.

What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel rod?
316 contains added molybdenum, giving it materially better resistance to chloride-induced pitting and corrosion in marine, chemical and de-icing salt environments compared to 304. 304 is the more common, lower-cost general-purpose grade, adequate for most atmospheric and food-contact applications that don't involve sustained chloride exposure.
Why is 303 stainless used instead of 304 for machined parts?
303 has added sulfur specifically to improve machinability, producing shorter chips and better surface finish at higher cutting speeds — making it the standard choice for high-volume CNC turning. The tradeoff is slightly reduced corrosion resistance and poor weldability compared to 304, so 303 isn't specified where welding or maximum corrosion resistance is required.
What is 17-4PH stainless and when is it used instead of 304 or 316?
17-4PH is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless grade that can be heat-treated after machining to significantly higher strength and hardness levels than 304 or 316 can achieve, while still offering good corrosion resistance. It's specified for aerospace components, high-strength fasteners and other applications needing both corrosion resistance and mechanical strength beyond what austenitic grades provide.
What's the difference between 304 and 304L?
304L has a lower maximum carbon content than standard 304, which prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding — a phenomenon that can cause corrosion (sensitization) near weld zones in standard 304. 304L is specified whenever the material will be welded, particularly in heavier sections, while standard 304 is fine for non-welded applications.
What finish should I choose for precision machined parts — mill, cold-drawn, or ground and polished?
Ground and polished stock holds a tighter diameter tolerance out of the mill, reducing or eliminating the need for a rough turning pass before finish machining. Cold-drawn stock offers a good balance of tolerance and cost for general machining, while mill (hot-rolled) finish is the least expensive but requires the most stock removal to reach final dimensions.
