What Is a Resistant LED Light Fixture?
Resistant (or 'vapor-tight') LED fixtures use a sealed housing and gasketed lens, typically polycarbonate or fiberglass-reinforced, to keep out moisture, dust and in some cases corrosive chemical vapors, rated to a specific IP (Ingress Protection) code that defines both solids and liquid ingress resistance. An IP65 fixture resists dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction; IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down spray, which matters directly in food and beverage plants using daily steam or hot-water cleaning cycles.
Beyond ingress rating, fixtures for corrosive environments — wastewater treatment, coastal facilities, chemical processing — use corrosion-resistant housing materials and hardware (stainless steel or coated fasteners) since a fixture that's water-tight but uses standard steel hardware will still corrode and fail prematurely in a chemically aggressive atmosphere. Fixtures for classified hazardous locations require separate explosion-proof or hazardous-location certification beyond a standard IP rating.

What does the IP rating on a light fixture actually mean?
The IP (Ingress Protection) code has two digits — the first for solid particle (dust) resistance, the second for water resistance. IP65 resists dust ingress and low-pressure water jets; IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature spray, which is the rating required for daily hot wash-down cleaning in food processing environments.
Is an IP65 rated fixture good enough for a food processing wash-down area?
Not for areas with routine high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down — IP65 covers only low-pressure water jets, while IP69K specifically addresses the combination of high pressure and high temperature spray used in sanitation cycles. Using an under-rated fixture in a daily wash-down environment leads to premature moisture ingress and failure.
Why would I need a corrosion-resistant fixture instead of just a water-tight one?
A fixture can be fully water-tight (high IP rating) and still corrode if its housing material and hardware aren't resistant to the specific chemicals or salt-laden air in the environment — a standard steel fixture with a sealed lens will still rust from the outside in a chemically aggressive atmosphere. Corrosion-resistant fixtures use materials like polycarbonate, fiberglass or stainless steel throughout.
Do I need an explosion-proof fixture or just a high-IP fixture?
These are separate certifications — an IP rating addresses dust and moisture ingress, while explosion-proof or hazardous-location certification (Class I/II Division 1/2) addresses whether the fixture can safely operate in an atmosphere containing flammable gas, vapor or combustible dust without becoming an ignition source. A high-IP fixture is not automatically hazardous-location rated.
Can standard LED fixtures be used in cold storage?
Standard LED drivers are not always rated for sustained sub-freezing operation and can fail prematurely or perform inconsistently in cold storage. Fixtures specifically rated for cold storage temperatures use drivers and components qualified for that operating range, and should be specified by the storage facility's actual temperature range rather than assuming a standard fixture will hold up.
