What Is a Push Button Head?
Industrial push button heads are built around two dominant mounting standards — 22mm (more common in Europe/IEC-based designs, per IEC 60947-5-1) and 30mm (the traditional NEMA/North American standard) — and a head from one standard will not mount into a hole cut for the other without an adapter ring. Within a standard, however, heads from a given manufacturer's line are typically modular: the operator head, the contact block(s) behind the panel, and any legend plate or illumination module can often be mixed and matched, though cross-brand compatibility is not guaranteed even at the same nominal mounting size.
Actuator style is chosen for the operating conditions and intent: a flush head sits nearly level with the panel and resists accidental bumping, an extended head projects further for easier operation with gloves, and a mushroom (palm) head provides a large target for emergency-stop or two-hand-control applications where fast, unmistakable activation matters more than a compact footprint. Illuminated buttons integrate an LED or incandescent lamp module behind a translucent lens and require the control circuit to supply the lamp voltage separately from the switching contacts, which must be accounted for in the panel wiring.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting Diameter | 22mm (IEC) or 30mm (NEMA) | Not interchangeable between standards without an adapter ring; must match the existing panel cutout |
| Actuator Style | Flush, extended, mushroom/palm | Flush resists accidental activation; extended suits gloved operation; mushroom suits e-stop/two-hand control |
| Illumination | Non-illuminated vs. illuminated (LED/incandescent) | Illuminated heads need a separate lamp voltage supply in addition to the switching contact circuit |
| Contact Configuration | 1NO, 1NC, 1NO+1NC, or multiple blocks | Must match the control circuit's logic requirement — swapping contact configuration changes circuit behavior |
| Color/Legend | Standardized colors per function (red=stop, green=start) | Color conventions are often mandated by machine safety standards, not just operator preference |

FAQ
Push Button Heads Questions, Answered
Will a 22mm push button fit a 30mm panel cutout, or vice versa?
Not directly — the two are different mounting standards with different hole diameters, so a 22mm head won't seat correctly in a 30mm cutout and vice versa. Adapter rings exist to fit a 22mm component into a 30mm hole, but check panel space and legend plate fit before relying on an adapter.
Can I mix push button heads and contact blocks from different manufacturers?
Generally not reliably — even though many manufacturers use a similar modular head/contact-block architecture at the same nominal mounting size, the mounting mechanism and pin alignment between head and block are typically brand-specific. Stick to one manufacturer's line for a given control station unless compatibility is explicitly confirmed.
What's the difference between a flush and extended head button?
A flush head sits nearly level with the panel surface, which helps prevent accidental activation from something brushing against the panel — extended heads project further out, making them easier to press quickly or with gloved hands, at the cost of being more exposed to accidental bumps.
Why do illuminated push buttons need separate wiring from regular ones?
An illuminated button has two independent circuits sharing one housing: the switching contacts (which carry the control signal) and the lamp circuit (which powers the illumination). These typically run at different voltages and must be wired separately in the panel — illumination doesn't come free from the same wires as the switch contacts.
Is button color standardized, or can I choose any color for any function?
Color conventions for push buttons are often specified by machine safety standards (e.g., red for stop/emergency stop, green for start) rather than left to preference, especially on equipment subject to machine safety compliance. Check the applicable standard for your equipment before choosing colors that deviate from convention.
