What Is a Polishing Belt?
A polishing belt is a continuous loop of abrasive material run on a belt grinder or finishing machine to refine a metal surface progressively finer than what a standard sanding belt leaves, bridging the gap between coarse grinding and final buffing. Non-woven belts use abrasive particles embedded in a nylon web rather than a solid cloth backing, giving a more forgiving, blending action that resists creating hard lines.
Grit progression matters as much as final grit choice — skipping grit steps leaves deeper scratch patterns from the coarser step visible under the finer finish. A cloth-backed polishing belt is typically used bare or loaded with buffing compound to carry the fine abrasive to the surface for a final mirror-bright finish, rather than cutting on its own.
Do I need to progress through every grit, or can I skip steps?
Skipping grit steps leaves the deeper scratch pattern from the coarser grit visible beneath the finer finish, especially under angled light — a proper progression (e.g., 120 to 220 to 400 to non-woven to buff) removes each prior scratch pattern fully before moving finer.
What grit should I finish at before switching to a buffing wheel?
Most metal finishing sequences move to a fine non-woven or 400-600 grit belt as the last abrasive step before switching to a cloth buffing wheel loaded with compound, since buffing compound alone can't remove visible scratches left by anything coarser.
Can the same polishing belt be used on stainless steel and aluminum?
