What Is a Paint Strainer?
A paint strainer is a disposable mesh filter, shaped as a cone or a bag, that sits inside a paint cup, pot or bucket to remove skin, dried chips, dirt and other debris from paint or coating before it's applied. Cone strainers are typically hung by their rim over a container and paint is poured through; bag strainers are used for larger volumes and are placed inside 5-gallon pails so the entire container's contents pass through the mesh as it's poured or pumped out.
Mesh size — expressed in microns or a mesh count — is chosen to match both the coating's intended application method and its natural particle tolerance: fine mesh (100-190 micron range) is required ahead of HVLP and airless spray guns where even small particles can clog a tip, while coarser mesh (600 micron and up) is adequate for roller or brush application of latex or heavier-bodied coatings where straining is mainly about removing skin and large debris rather than fine particulate.

Can I reuse a paint strainer?
