What Is a Packaging and Shipping Accessorie?
Packaging and shipping accessories are the consumable materials used to close, protect, identify and secure a shipment after the product itself is boxed or palletized — tape to seal cartons, stretch wrap to unitize a pallet load, void fill to prevent shifting inside a box, strapping to secure heavier or irregular loads, and labels to identify and route the shipment. Each category is chosen independently based on the load's weight, fragility and handling path, not as a single bundled kit.
Sizing and grade matter more than they appear: packing tape is rated by width and adhesive/backing type (acrylic vs. hot-melt, and mil thickness of the backing) which determines seal strength and temperature tolerance; stretch wrap is rated by gauge (thickness) and whether it's hand-applied or machine-grade, since machine wrap is engineered for a different stretch ratio than hand wrap; strapping is rated by break strength and width, matched to the pallet or bundle weight it needs to secure.

What's the difference between hand stretch wrap and machine stretch wrap?
Hand stretch wrap is designed for a lower pre-stretch ratio applied manually with a hand dispenser, suited to lower-volume or irregular pallet wrapping. Machine stretch wrap is engineered for the higher, consistent pre-stretch ratios that automated wrapping equipment applies, which reduces film usage per pallet — using hand wrap film in a machine (or vice versa) generally produces inconsistent tension and wasted material.
How do I choose the right packing tape for my boxes?
Match tape width to your carton's flap size (2 inch is standard for most cartons), and choose backing type based on conditions: acrylic adhesive tape offers good general-purpose adhesion and UV/temperature stability for standard shipping, while hot-melt adhesive tape offers stronger initial tack, useful for cold storage or dusty/recycled cartons where acrylic may not adhere as well.
What strapping width and break strength do I need for a pallet?
Strapping needs to be sized to the total load weight and how the load will be handled in transit — as a general guide, heavier and less stable loads need wider strapping with higher break strength, and the strap should be tensioned to hold the load together under the stresses of transport handling, not just static weight. Check with your carrier or use a load-securement calculator rather than guessing, since under-strapping is a common cause of in-transit load shifting.
When should I use void fill vs. just a bigger box?
Void fill is used to eliminate empty space around a product inside its shipping box so it can't shift during transit, which matters even in a well-sized box if the product itself is irregular or fragile. A bigger box with more void fill isn't necessarily better — oversized boxes with too much loose fill can let a product move around more, not less, so matching box size to product first and using void fill to eliminate remaining gaps is the more reliable approach.
What's the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer shipping labels?
Direct thermal labels use heat-sensitive paper that darkens directly under the printhead, requiring no ribbon, but the image fades over time with heat or sunlight exposure — fine for short-term shipping labels. Thermal transfer labels use a ribbon to transfer ink onto the label, producing a more durable, long-lasting image suited to labels that need to stay legible for extended periods, like asset tags or compliance labels.
