What Is a Marking Flag?
Marking flags are a colored vinyl or plastic flag fixed to a galvanized or plastic wire stake, pushed into the ground to visually mark a location — most commonly an underground utility line located ahead of excavation. In North America, flag color follows the APWA (American Public Works Association) Uniform Color Code, so a flag's color alone communicates what's buried beneath it (red for electric, yellow for gas, orange for communications, and so on) to anyone on a job site, not just the crew that placed it.
Wire gauge and length matter for how the flag performs in the field: a heavier gauge wire (typically 9-15 gauge) resists bending in hard or rocky soil, while length (commonly 15-36 inches) is chosen so the flag stays visible above tall grass or snow cover. Flag material is usually a UV-stabilized vinyl to resist fading and cracking over weeks of outdoor exposure between marking and excavation.
