What Is a Magnetic Locator?
A magnetic locator is a passive instrument that detects distortions in the earth's ambient magnetic field caused by nearby ferrous (iron-containing) objects — it does not emit any signal of its own, unlike an active electromagnetic pipe locator. This makes it effective for finding buried rebar, iron survey stakes, cast iron well casings, manhole covers and utility markers even when they're not connected to any electrical circuit or tracer wire, and it works through concrete, soil, asphalt and non-ferrous fill.
Detection range depends on the target's mass and the locator's sensitivity setting — a large iron well casing can be detected several feet away, while a small rebar tie or nail may only register within inches. Because the instrument responds to any ferrous mass, results near reinforced concrete, chain-link fence, or other structural steel require care to distinguish the intended target from background interference; most units provide adjustable sensitivity and audible or needle-deflection feedback to help isolate a single reading.

How is a magnetic locator different from a metal detector or pipe locator?
A magnetic locator only detects ferrous (iron-containing) metals by sensing distortion in the earth's natural magnetic field, and it works passively with no signal transmission. A general metal detector uses an active electromagnetic field to detect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals but typically at shallower depth. An active pipe/cable locator transmits a signal through a conductor (a wire or metallic pipe) and traces that signal, which requires the target to carry or be connected to the transmitted signal — it cannot find an isolated object like a rebar tie.
What depth can a magnetic locator actually detect rebar at?
Detection depth depends heavily on the mass of the target — a single small rebar tie or nail may only be detectable within a few inches, while a larger mass of rebar or a cast iron well casing can be detected several feet away. Manufacturers publish maximum detection depths for their largest reference target, so real-world performance on smaller objects will be considerably less than the headline spec.
Will a magnetic locator give false readings near a chain-link fence or rebar-heavy slab?
Yes — because the instrument responds to any ferrous mass in range, dense structural steel, rebar mats, chain-link fencing or nearby vehicles can produce readings that mask or are mistaken for the intended target. Adjustable sensitivity settings help narrow the response to a localized peak, and operators typically sweep from multiple directions to confirm a genuine, isolated target.
Can a magnetic locator find non-ferrous pipe like PVC or copper?
No. Because it works purely by sensing distortion of the magnetic field caused by ferrous material, a magnetic locator cannot detect non-ferrous materials such as PVC, copper, aluminum or concrete directly. It can, however, often locate a ferrous tracer wire, metallic marker tape, or a cast iron fitting connected to a non-ferrous pipe run.
What's the benefit of a waterproof or submersible magnetic locator?
A water-resistant or submersible housing allows the locator to be used directly in wet excavation trenches, fresh concrete pours, or shallow standing water without damage — common on active jobsites where dewatering isn't always practical before locating work needs to happen.
