What Is a LED Light Panel?
An LED light panel is a flat, low-profile fixture designed to drop into a standard suspended ceiling grid (typically 2x2 ft or 2x4 ft) as a direct troffer replacement, or surface/pendant mount elsewhere. Edge-lit panels place LEDs around the perimeter shining into a light guide plate that distributes light evenly across the face, giving a thin profile (often under 1 inch); backlit panels place LED arrays directly behind a diffuser across the full panel area, typically achieving higher uniformity and lumen output at a similar wattage.
Color temperature (CCT) and CRI (color rendering index) matter as much as lumen output for occupied spaces — 3500K-4000K is standard for offices and commercial space, 5000K for task-focused or industrial areas, and a CRI of 80+ (90+ for color-critical work) ensures colors render accurately under the fixture. Many panels now ship as CCT/wattage-selectable, letting the installer set the color temperature and output at install time from a single SKU.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Panel Size | 1x4, 2x2, 2x4 ft standard ceiling grid sizes | Must match the suspended ceiling grid module to drop in without cutting tile |
| Lumen Output | 2,000-6,000+ lumens depending on size/wattage | Determines achievable foot-candle level for the space per IES lighting recommendations |
| Color Temperature (CCT) | 3000K-5000K, often field-selectable | 3500-4000K suits general office space; 5000K suits task/industrial areas |
| CRI (Color Rendering Index) | 80+ standard, 90+ for color-critical work | Higher CRI renders colors more accurately under the fixture, important in retail and inspection areas |
| Panel Technology | Edge-lit (light guide plate) vs. backlit (direct array) | Backlit typically gives higher lumen output and uniformity at similar wattage vs. edge-lit's thinner profile |

FAQ
LED Light Panels Questions, Answered
What's the difference between edge-lit and backlit LED panels?
Edge-lit panels place LEDs around the perimeter shining into a light guide plate, giving a very thin profile (often under an inch) but slightly less uniform light. Backlit panels place an LED array directly behind the diffuser across the whole panel face, typically giving higher lumen output and more even light distribution, at a somewhat greater fixture depth.
What color temperature should I choose for an office ceiling?
3500K-4000K is the standard range for general commercial office space, providing a neutral-to-slightly-cool white that most people find comfortable for extended work. 5000K is more common in industrial, warehouse or task-focused areas where a brighter, cooler light aids visual acuity.
Will a 2x4 LED panel fit a standard troffer opening?
Yes, provided the ceiling grid is a standard 2x4 ft (or 2x2 ft) module — LED panels are manufactured specifically to match these standard suspended ceiling dimensions so they drop in without modifying the grid or tile.
What does CCT/wattage-selectable mean?
It means a single panel model lets the installer choose the color temperature and light output level via a switch on the fixture at install time, rather than stocking separate SKUs for each CCT/wattage combination — useful for contractors standardizing on fewer part numbers.
Are LED panels dimmable?
Many are, but dimming requires a compatible dimmer and driver combination — 0-10V dimming is the most common standard for commercial LED panels. Confirm the panel's driver type matches your dimming control system before installation.
