What Is a LED High Bay Fixture?
A high bay fixture is a ceiling-mounted light designed for spaces with ceilings roughly 20 feet or higher — warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing floors, and gymnasiums — where the fixture must throw a concentrated, high-lumen beam down to the working plane. LED high bays replaced metal halide and fluorescent high bays because of dramatically longer service life, instant-on operation, and lower energy draw for equivalent or better illuminance at the floor.
Fixtures are commonly sold as round 'UFO' style (compact, wide beam angle, easiest retrofit for existing hook mounts) or linear style (elongated, often used in aisle applications for more uniform coverage along a row). Sizing is driven by mounting height and target foot-candles at the floor: higher ceilings need more lumens and a narrower beam angle to maintain adequate lux, while lower mounting heights can use lower-wattage fixtures with wider beam spread.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lumen Output | 10,000 to 40,000+ lumens per fixture | Must be matched to mounting height to achieve target floor illuminance (lux/fc) |
| Wattage | 100W to 300W+ typical LED high bay range | Lower wattage than legacy metal halide for equivalent or greater light output |
| Beam Angle | 60°, 90°, 120° typical options | Narrower beam concentrates light for higher ceilings; wider spreads coverage at lower heights |
| Color Temperature | 4000K (neutral) to 5700K (daylight) | Higher Kelvin renders colors more sharply, common preference for industrial/warehouse work |
| Mounting Style | Hook-and-chain, U-bracket, surface, pendant | Determines retrofit compatibility with existing high bay mounting infrastructure |

FAQ
LED High Bay Fixtures Questions, Answered
How many lumens do I need for my ceiling height?
As a rough guide, higher mounting heights require proportionally more lumens to maintain adequate floor illuminance — a 20-foot ceiling might target 15,000-18,000 lumens per fixture while a 40-foot ceiling could need 30,000+ lumens or a narrower beam angle fixture, but a proper photometric layout accounting for fixture spacing and reflectance is the reliable way to hit a target foot-candle level.
UFO high bay or linear high bay — which should I choose?
UFO (round) high bays are compact, retrofit easily onto existing hook-and-chain mounts, and suit open floor areas needing a wide, even beam. Linear high bays elongate the light pattern, which works well down warehouse aisles and rack rows where uniform coverage along a line matters more than a wide circular spread.
What color temperature is best for warehouse lighting?
5000K-5700K (daylight white) is common in warehouses and industrial settings for its sharper contrast and better color rendering during picking and inspection tasks, while 4000K (neutral white) is a common alternative that's slightly less stark. Choice is largely a facility preference rather than a strict technical requirement.
Can LED high bays replace metal halide fixtures directly?
Most LED high bays are designed as direct retrofits for the same hook-and-chain or U-bracket mounting used by metal halide fixtures, and typically achieve equal or greater lumen output at roughly half the wattage, but always verify the mounting style and any required junction box or wiring changes before ordering.
Do LED high bays work in cold storage environments?
Standard LED high bays generally perform well in cold environments and, unlike fluorescent or HID fixtures, start instantly at low temperatures — but for freezer or extreme cold storage applications, confirm the fixture's rated operating temperature range and driver cold-start rating before specifying.
