What Is a Keyed Alike Padlock?
Keyed alike padlocks are a set of individual padlocks manufactured or factory-configured so that a single key operates every lock in the set, unlike keyed-different padlocks where each lock requires its own unique key. This is achieved either by ordering the same factory-preset keyed-alike code across multiple locks, or by having a locksmith re-pin standard padlocks to a common key — the former is far more common and reliable for facility-scale purchasing.
Security level is governed by shackle material and diameter, body construction, and pin/tumbler complexity — laminated steel bodies are economical and widely used for general facility access, while solid brass or boron-alloy hardened-shackle padlocks resist cutting and drilling attacks better and are specified for higher-security or lockout/tagout applications. Keyed-alike sets are commonly ordered in specific quantities (matching a facility's number of gates, cabinets or equipment lockout points) rather than as an open-ended standard product.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shackle Material | Boron alloy (hardened), standard steel, stainless | Hardened shackles resist bolt cutters and hacksaws far better than standard steel |
| Body Material | Laminated steel, solid brass, die-cast | Solid brass resists corrosion better for outdoor/marine use; laminated steel is standard for general indoor/outdoor use |
| Keyed-Alike Code | Factory-set common key code across the ordered set | Confirm all locks in an order actually share the requested code — reorders may need the same code specified again |
| Shackle Size | Height and diameter, e.g. 1 in x 1/4 in | Must fit the hasp, chain link or application it's securing |
| Weather Resistance | Sealed cylinder, corrosion-resistant coating | Required for outdoor gates and equipment exposed to rain, salt air or temperature extremes |

FAQ
Keyed Alike Padlocks Questions, Answered
What's the difference between keyed alike and master keyed padlocks?
Keyed alike padlocks all open with the exact same single key — there's no hierarchy, and any key from the set opens any lock in the set. Master keyed systems are different: individual locks each have their own unique key, but a separate master key can also open all of them, giving supervisors broader access while individual users retain lock-specific keys.
Can I add more padlocks to an existing keyed alike set later?
Yes, in most cases — order additional locks specifying the same keyed-alike code as your original set (most manufacturers can look up or track a previous keyed-alike order). Confirm with the seller before ordering, since not every keyed-alike code may be re-orderable indefinitely depending on the manufacturer's system.
What shackle material should I choose for lockout/tagout use?
Lockout/tagout applications typically call for hardened (boron alloy) shackles specifically to resist bolt cutters and unauthorized removal, since the entire purpose of a LOTO lock is that it cannot be bypassed except by the authorized person holding the key. Standard steel shackles are more appropriate for general-purpose, lower-security applications.
Are keyed alike padlocks less secure than individually keyed locks?
Keyed alike locks are not inherently less secure in terms of pick or cut resistance — that's determined by shackle and body construction, not the keying scheme. The security trade-off is different: losing one key in a keyed-alike set compromises every lock in that set, so keyed-alike sets are best used where the group of key holders is trusted and controlled.
Can I get replacement keys for a keyed alike padlock set?
Most manufacturers can supply replacement keys cut to match your keyed-alike code, provided you have a record of the code or the original purchase reference. Keep documentation of your keyed-alike code number at time of purchase specifically to support future replacement key orders.
