What Is a Fork Cover?
Fork covers are protective sleeves or boots fitted over forklift fork blades to prevent the bare metal fork surface from scratching, denting, or puncturing loads during lifting and transport — commonly specified when handling painted, finished, or fragile goods such as appliances, cabinetry, or packaged retail product where cosmetic damage from bare forks would create returns or claims. Covers are made from either flexible polyurethane, which conforms closely to the fork profile and cushions impact, or heavier nylon/fabric construction for more general wear protection at lower cost.
Fit is determined by the fork blade's cross-section (width and thickness) and length, and covers must be sized to the specific fork blade rather than the truck's rated capacity, since fork blade dimensions vary independently across forklift models and capacity classes. Covers are secured with straps, buckles, or hook-and-loop closures along the top of the fork, and should be inspected periodically for wear that could compromise their protective cushioning.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polyurethane, nylon/fabric | Polyurethane cushions and conforms closely; nylon offers lower-cost general wear protection |
| Fork Blade Size Fit | Sized to width x thickness x length of the specific fork blade | Independent of truck capacity rating — measure the actual installed forks |
| Closure Method | Straps, buckles, hook-and-loop | Determines how securely the cover stays seated during repeated load engagement |
| Load Protection Use Case | Finished goods, appliances, packaged retail, fragile crates | Prevents cosmetic scratch/dent damage that bare metal forks would cause |
| Wear Inspection | Periodic visual check for tears or thinning | Worn covers lose cushioning and can allow the same damage they're meant to prevent |

FAQ
Fork Covers Questions, Answered
How do I measure my forks for the correct cover size?
Measure the fork blade's width, thickness (vertical section) and full length at the installed forks themselves, not the truck's capacity rating — fork blade dimensions vary independently of truck class, and a cover sized to the wrong dimension either won't fit or will fit too loosely to stay seated during use.
Polyurethane or nylon fork covers — which should I choose?
Polyurethane covers conform more closely to the fork profile and provide better cushioning against impact, making them the better choice for cosmetically sensitive loads like painted or finished goods. Nylon/fabric covers cost less and provide adequate general wear protection where the main concern is scratching rather than impact cushioning.
Do fork covers reduce a forklift's rated load capacity?
Fork covers add negligible weight and thickness and are not intended to change the fork's structural load rating; however, always confirm with the truck and fork manufacturer that a specific cover doesn't affect fork engagement geometry or rated capacity for your particular equipment.
How long do fork covers typically last?
Service life depends heavily on use intensity and the abrasiveness of loads handled — a facility handling primarily boxed goods will see covers last considerably longer than one handling rough crated freight. Inspect covers periodically for thinning, tears, or exposed fork metal, and replace before the underlying fork surface becomes exposed.
Can fork covers be used with fork extensions?
Yes — fork covers are available sized for fork extensions as well as standard fork blades, and some extension products come with covers pre-integrated. Ensure the cover is sized to the extension's actual blade dimensions, not the base fork it slides over, since extension geometry often differs from the truck's OEM forks.
