What Is a Edge Mount Standoff?
An edge mount standoff clamps a panel between two jaws at its edge, rather than requiring a hole drilled through the panel face the way a traditional through-mount standoff does — this preserves the appearance of unbroken glass or acrylic and avoids the stress concentration a drilled hole introduces into brittle panel material. The standoff body projects the panel away from the wall or mounting surface by a fixed distance, creating the same floating, shadow-gap look as a through-mount standoff but from the edge instead of the face.
Clamp jaw opening range must match the panel thickness with enough clamping force to hold the panel securely without over-torquing and cracking it — most edge standoffs are adjustable within a thickness range (commonly covering 1/4″ to 1/2″ panels) via a set screw or cam mechanism. Because the panel edge itself is rarely finished as cleanly as its face, edge standoffs are more commonly used with tempered or laminated glass and cast acrylic, where the edge can tolerate clamping pressure without chipping.
