What Is a Drawer Slide?
Drawer slides are rated by dynamic load capacity — the weight the slide can support while extending and retracting under normal use — and this rating drops significantly on longer slide lengths, so the same product line's capacity at 12 inches doesn't carry over to its 36-inch version. Ball bearing slides use recirculating ball bearings between the slide members for smooth operation and higher load capacity relative to their size, while simpler roller slides use fixed rollers and are generally lower cost but lower capacity and less smooth under heavy load.
Extension type determines how far the drawer travels relative to the cabinet: partial extension slides expose roughly 3/4 of the drawer's depth, full extension slides expose the drawer's full depth for complete access to its back, and over-travel slides extend beyond full depth — useful in tool storage and industrial applications where reaching the very back of a deep drawer matters. Mounting style (side-mount vs. undermount/bottom-mount) affects both the drawer box construction required and the finished look, with undermount slides hidden from view when the drawer is closed.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Load Capacity | Dynamic rating, commonly 75-500+ lb per pair | Rating decreases at longer slide lengths within the same product line — check length-specific rating |
| Extension Type | Partial, full extension, over-travel | Full and over-travel extension needed for complete access to the drawer's back contents |
| Bearing Type | Ball bearing vs. roller | Ball bearing gives smoother operation and higher capacity-to-size ratio than roller slides |
| Mounting Style | Side-mount vs. undermount/bottom-mount | Undermount is concealed when closed; side-mount is typically easier to install and adjust |
| Additional Features | Soft-close, lock-in/lock-out detents | Soft-close reduces slam impact; detents hold the drawer open or prevent accidental full removal |

FAQ
Drawer Slides Questions, Answered
How is the load capacity rating on a drawer slide actually determined?
Manufacturers rate slides for dynamic load — the weight the slide pair can support while being extended and retracted through its normal travel, not just a static weight sitting still. This rating is specific to each length within a product line, since longer slides generally have lower rated capacity than shorter slides of the same series, so always check the rating for the exact length being used, not just the product family's headline number.
What's the difference between full extension and over-travel slides?
Full extension slides let the drawer travel out to expose its complete depth, so the entire contents are visible and accessible with the drawer fully open. Over-travel slides extend even further, beyond the drawer's own depth, which is useful in deep industrial or tool storage drawers where reaching contents at the very back would otherwise require leaning over the cabinet.
Why choose ball bearing slides over simpler roller slides?
Ball bearing slides use recirculating ball bearings that distribute load more evenly and roll with less friction than fixed rollers, giving smoother operation, generally higher load capacity for a given slide size, and better performance under heavy or repeated use. Roller slides are typically lower cost and adequate for lighter-duty, less frequently used drawers.
What's the difference between side-mount and undermount drawer slides?
Side-mount slides attach to the sides of the drawer box and are visible when the drawer is open; they're generally easier to install and adjust and support a wide range of load capacities. Undermount slides attach beneath the drawer box and are completely concealed when the drawer is closed, giving a cleaner appearance, but require the drawer box to be built to a compatible dimension and are typically used in cabinetry rather than industrial storage.
Do drawer slides need to be replaced in pairs, and can I mix brands?
Slides are almost always installed and load-rated as a matched pair (one on each side of the drawer), and mixing different models or brands risks uneven travel, binding, or a mismatch in load rating between the two sides. When replacing a worn slide, match the exact model on both sides rather than replacing only the failed one.
