What Is a Door Sweep?
A door sweep is a strip attached along the bottom edge of a door that closes the gap between the door and the threshold, blocking drafts, dust, insects and light. Standard styles include a vinyl or silicone fin set into an aluminum retainer, a nylon or polypropylene brush strip for uneven or heavily trafficked floors, and automatic drop-down sweeps that retract on door swing and seal only when closed.
Selection depends on the gap being closed and the floor surface: a fixed vinyl-fin sweep works well on smooth, level flooring but will drag or wear quickly on carpet or uneven concrete, where a brush sweep flexes to maintain contact. Fire-rated doors require sweeps specifically listed for that assembly, since an unlisted sweep can void the door's fire rating.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sweep Material | Vinyl, silicone, nylon brush, rubber blade | Determines flexibility, durability and floor-surface compatibility |
| Mounting Style | Surface-mount, mortise, automatic drop-down | Sets installation method and whether the sweep retracts during swing |
| Gap Tolerance | Fixed vs. adjustable clearance | Must match the actual door-to-threshold gap for an effective seal |
| Retainer Material | Aluminum, stainless steel | Affects corrosion resistance for exterior or washdown environments |
| Fire Rating | UL-listed for rated door assemblies | Required to preserve the fire rating of a rated door assembly |

FAQ
Door Sweeps Questions, Answered
How do I measure for a replacement door sweep?
Measure the full width of the door bottom edge, then measure the actual gap between the door and the threshold when closed — most sweeps are sold slightly oversized for field trimming, but the gap measurement determines whether a fixed or adjustable sweep is needed.
What's the difference between a brush sweep and a vinyl-fin sweep?
A brush sweep uses flexible nylon or polypropylene bristles that conform to uneven or textured flooring, making it better for concrete, carpet transitions or worn thresholds. A vinyl-fin sweep uses a rigid fin that seals tightly on smooth, level flooring but can drag or tear on rough surfaces.
Can I install any door sweep on a fire-rated door?
No — fire-rated door assemblies require a sweep specifically listed and labeled for that rating; installing an unlisted sweep can void the door's fire certification and create a code compliance issue during inspection.
What is an automatic drop-down door sweep?
It's a spring-loaded sweep mounted in the door bottom that retracts as the door swings open and drops to seal the gap only when the door is fully closed, commonly used where a fixed sweep would drag on carpet or interfere with swing clearance.
Do door sweeps help with sound insulation?
Yes — a properly fitted sweep closing the under-door gap reduces sound transmission along with drafts, though acoustic-rated doors typically pair the sweep with perimeter seals for full sound control.
