What Is a Distance Meter?
A laser distance meter measures length by timing or phase-shifting a laser beam reflected off a target surface, giving a precise single-point reading far faster than a tape measure and without needing a second person to hold the far end. Most units also calculate area and volume from stored length measurements, and many add features like Pythagorean (indirect) measurement for heights that can't be measured in a direct line of sight.
Accuracy and maximum range are the two specs that most directly determine fit for a job: general construction and facilities work is well served by units accurate to around 1/16 inch over ranges up to 100-200 feet, while long-range survey or large-facility work needs units rated for hundreds of feet, sometimes requiring a reflective target plate at extreme range for a reliable return signal. Ultrasonic meters, an older and less precise technology using sound waves instead of laser, are largely superseded by laser meters for most applications but remain in limited use for lower-cost, shorter-range needs.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring Range | Typically 100-650+ feet for laser units | Match to the largest single measurement expected — extreme range often needs a target plate for reliable reflection |
| Accuracy | Commonly ±1/16 inch to ±1/8 inch | Tighter accuracy matters more for layout and installation work than rough estimating |
| Technology | Laser (time-of-flight/phase-shift) vs. ultrasonic | Laser is more precise and reliable at range; ultrasonic is lower cost but less accurate |
| Calculation Functions | Area, volume, Pythagorean/indirect height, addition/subtraction | Determines how much of the job can be done with the meter alone vs. manual calculation afterward |
| Connectivity | Bluetooth/app pairing for data transfer to CAD or estimating software | Streamlines documentation for jobs requiring recorded measurements or floor plan generation |

FAQ
Distance Meters Questions, Answered
How much accuracy do I actually need?
For general construction, facilities and layout work, ±1/16 to ±1/8 inch accuracy is typically more than sufficient. Precision trades or work requiring tight tolerance measurements should look for units at the tighter end of that range and confirm the manufacturer's stated accuracy applies across the full measuring range being used, not just at short distances.
Do I need a laser meter or is ultrasonic good enough?
Laser meters are more accurate and reliable at range, and are now the standard choice for most professional applications. Ultrasonic meters are generally lower cost and adequate for rough, short-range estimating, but are more susceptible to interference from surrounding objects and less precise — laser is the better choice unless cost is the primary constraint.
What's a target plate and when do I need one?
A target plate is a small reflective panel held at the far measurement point to give the laser a stronger, more reliable return signal, needed mainly at extreme range, on dark or highly reflective surfaces, or outdoors in bright sunlight where the beam's natural reflection off the target surface may be too weak to read reliably.
Can a distance meter measure through walls or around corners?
No — a laser or ultrasonic distance meter requires direct line of sight to the target surface it's measuring to. For indirect measurements like a height that can't be measured in a straight line, most meters offer a Pythagorean/indirect measurement mode that calculates the value from two or three line-of-sight measurements instead.
Is Bluetooth connectivity worth paying extra for?
It's most valuable for anyone regularly documenting measurements for floor plans, estimates or reports, since it transfers readings directly to a phone app or software rather than requiring manual note-taking and re-entry, reducing transcription errors. For occasional single-measurement use, it's a convenience rather than a necessity.
