What Is a Cleanroom Product?

Cleanroom products are consumables and garments manufactured and packaged to shed minimal particulate and fiber, sized and rated to match the ISO 14644-1 classification of the controlled environment they're used in — an ISO Class 5 cleanroom (semiconductor-grade) demands far stricter particulate limits than an ISO Class 8 environment (general pharmaceutical or medical device assembly). Products are typically manufactured, laundered, and packaged in a cleanroom themselves to avoid introducing contamination before first use.

Wipes are the most application-specific category — knit polyester wipes shed the least particulate and suit the highest classifications, while lower-class environments can use more economical nonwoven wipes. Garments (coveralls, hoods, boots) are similarly classed, with sealed-seam, low-shed fabric required for higher ISO classes, and gloves are selected for both particulate shed and chemical compatibility with the process being protected.

ISO ClassificationISO 14644-1 Class 1– 9 (lower number = cleaner)Product particulate/fiber shed rating must meet or exceed the room's classification requirement
Wipe MaterialKnit polyester, nonwoven polyester/cellulose blendKnit polyester sheds least, required for highest ISO classes; nonwoven suits lower classes economically
Garment ConstructionSealed seams, low-shed fabric, sterile packagingHigher ISO classes require sealed-seam garments to minimize particle and fiber release
Glove MaterialNitrile, latex, vinyl — cleanroom-processedMust match both particulate rating and chemical compatibility with the process material
PackagingCleanroom-packaged, double-bagged for pass-throughPrevents contamination introduction before the product enters the controlled environment

FAQ

Cleanroom Products Questions, Answered

How do I know what ISO class product I need?

Match the product's rated particulate/fiber shed performance to your cleanroom's ISO 14644-1 classification — the room's classification is typically established during commissioning and documented in your facility's cleanroom validation records. Using a lower-rated product than your room's classification requires risks introducing contamination that the room's air handling can't fully remove.

What's the difference between knit and nonwoven cleanroom wipes?

Knit polyester wipes are constructed from continuous filament yarn, producing very low particle and fiber shed suitable for the highest ISO classes (Class 5 and below). Nonwoven wipes (polyester or cellulose blend) shed somewhat more but cost less, making them a practical choice for lower-classification environments (Class 7–9) where the strictest shed performance isn't required.

Do cleanroom gloves need to be chemically compatible, or just low-particulate?

Both — a glove can be manufactured and packaged to a low-particulate cleanroom standard but still be the wrong material for the process chemicals being handled. Confirm chemical compatibility (nitrile, latex, or vinyl) against your specific process solvents or reagents in addition to checking the particulate rating.

Why do cleanroom garments need sealed seams?

Standard sewn seams can shed fiber particles at the needle perforations even if the base fabric is low-shed. Sealed or bound seams eliminate this shed pathway, which matters more as the required ISO classification gets stricter — Class 5 and below environments typically require sealed-seam garments as standard.

How should cleanroom consumables be stored before use?

Keep cleanroom products in their original cleanroom packaging (often double-bagged) until the point of use, and follow your facility's gowning and material pass-through procedures to avoid introducing outside contamination when opening packaging inside the controlled environment.
