What Is a Buffing Wheel?
A buffing wheel is a soft, flexible wheel — most commonly stitched or loose-layered cotton, sisal, felt or canvas — mounted on a bench grinder, buffer or flexible-shaft tool and charged with an abrasive compound to cut, color or final-polish a metal, wood or plastic surface. Unlike a bonded grinding wheel, the abrasive lives in the compound applied to the wheel face, not in the wheel itself, so the same wheel can be used with different compounds across the polishing sequence.
Construction and stitching determine cut aggressiveness: sisal and hard spiral-sewn cotton wheels are firm and used for the initial cutting stage on rough or cast surfaces, while loose or lightly stitched cotton and soft flannel wheels are reserved for coloring and final high-luster passes. Ply count and section width set the wheel's stiffness and surface speed capacity — thicker, tightly bound wheels hold more compound and tolerate higher RPM without deforming under load.
