Mechanical angle clamps use a screw or lever mechanism to physically compress the pieces against a machined right-angle reference, guaranteeing squareness independent of the operator's eye, while magnetic angle clamps use rare-earth or standard magnets to hold ferrous material at a set angle without any moving clamping mechanism — faster to reposition but generally lower holding force than a mechanical clamp.

V-block style angle clamps add a grooved jaw that self-centers round stock (pipe or tube) at the correct angle, useful for welding round material where a flat-jaw clamp would only contact at a single point and allow rotation. Should I use a magnetic or mechanical angle clamp for welding?

Magnetic angle clamps reposition quickly and work well for light tack-welding tasks on ferrous metal, but generally provide less holding force than a mechanical screw or lever clamp and can be knocked out of position by weld spatter heat or vibration on heavier material. Mechanical clamps hold more rigidly and work on any material, making them the better choice for thicker stock or joints under more mechanical stress during welding.

What's a V-block angle clamp used for, and why not just use a flat-jaw clamp on round stock?

A flat-jaw clamp only contacts round pipe or tube at a single line of contact, allowing the material to rotate slightly under pressure and lose alignment. A V-block clamp has a grooved jaw that cradles round stock on two contact surfaces, self-centering it and preventing rotation — important for getting a consistent, accurate angle when welding round material.

Can an adjustable angle clamp hold a joint as rigidly as a fixed 90-degree clamp?

Generally not quite as rigidly — the adjustment mechanism (a pivot or slotted arc) that allows an adjustable clamp to be set to different angles introduces some additional flexibility compared to a purpose-built, fixed 90-degree clamp with no moving angle joint. For high-precision square work, a dedicated 90-degree clamp is usually the more accurate choice; adjustable clamps earn their place on miters and non-standard angles a fixed clamp can't do at all.

Do magnetic angle clamps work on stainless steel or aluminum?

Magnetic clamps rely on ferrous (iron-containing) material to hold — standard carbon steel works well, but austenitic stainless steel (the most common grade) is largely non-magnetic and won't hold securely, and aluminum won't hold at all since it isn't ferrous. For non-ferrous or non-magnetic stainless work, a mechanical clamp is required.

How do I know the jaw capacity I need?

Check the clamp's rated maximum material thickness (for flat stock) or tube/pipe diameter (for V-block clamps) against your actual workpiece dimensions — a clamp that can't close fully on your material won't achieve full holding force even if it appears to grip. When working with a range of stock sizes, an adjustable-capacity clamp avoids needing multiple fixed-size clamps.
