This makes air winches the standard choice in hazardous, explosive, or flammable-vapor environments — offshore platforms, refineries, mines — where an electric motor's potential spark risk is unacceptable, since a properly rated air winch has no ignition source.

Drum winches spool the entire length of cable onto the winch itself and are suited to lifting and hoisting where a fixed, wound cable is appropriate, while capstan (tugger) winches use a rotating friction drum that the rope wraps around several times and feeds through, allowing effectively unlimited rope length since the rope isn't stored on the winch.
