What Is a UPS System?
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides battery-backed power to connected equipment during a utility outage and conditions incoming power against sags, surges and noise. Standby (offline) UPS units normally pass utility power straight through and switch to battery/inverter power only when an outage is detected, with a brief transfer time (typically 4-12 milliseconds) — adequate for most desktop computers but risky for sensitive equipment that can reset during that gap. Line-interactive UPS adds automatic voltage regulation (AVR) that corrects minor sags and surges without switching to battery, extending battery life and improving power quality without the higher cost of a fully online design.
Online double-conversion UPS continuously converts incoming AC to DC and back to AC through the inverter, so connected equipment always runs off the inverter output with zero transfer time during an outage — the standard for data centers, medical equipment and other loads that cannot tolerate any interruption or power quality variation. Sizing is based on both VA (apparent power) and watts (real power) of the connected load, plus required runtime, which is extended by adding external battery packs rather than a larger primary unit.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Topology | Standby (offline), line-interactive, online double-conversion | Determines transfer time and power conditioning — online has zero transfer time, standby has a brief gap |
| VA/Watt Capacity | Total connected load in volt-amps and watts | UPS must be sized above total connected load with headroom for startup surge and future growth |
| Runtime at Full Load | Minutes of battery backup at rated load | Standard units provide 5-15 min; extended runtime requires additional external battery packs |
| Form Factor | Tower, rack-mount (in rack units) | Rack-mount units integrate into standard 19" server racks; tower units suit standalone equipment |
| Output Waveform | Pure sine wave vs. simulated/stepped sine wave | Sensitive electronics and equipment with active PFC power supplies require pure sine wave output |

FAQ
UPS Systems Questions, Answered
What's the difference between online, line-interactive and standby UPS?
A standby (offline) UPS passes utility power through directly and only switches to battery during an outage, with a brief transfer gap. A line-interactive UPS adds automatic voltage regulation to correct minor sags and surges without switching to battery, improving power quality and battery longevity. An online double-conversion UPS continuously runs connected equipment off its inverter output, so there's zero transfer time during an outage — the standard for the most critical, interruption-intolerant loads.
How do I size a UPS for my equipment?
Add up the VA and watt ratings of everything that will connect to the UPS, then choose a unit rated above that total with headroom (typically 20-30%) for startup surge current and future load growth. Also factor in required runtime — a UPS provides enough charge for a brief bridge or graceful shutdown at full load, and longer runtime requires either a larger unit or additional external battery packs.
Why does my equipment need a pure sine wave UPS?
Some UPS units, particularly lower-cost standby models, output a simulated or stepped approximation of a sine wave on battery power rather than a true sine wave. Many modern power supplies — especially those with active power factor correction (PFC), common in servers and quality electronics — can behave erratically, run hot, or shut down entirely on a non-pure-sine-wave input, so always confirm pure sine wave output for sensitive or PFC-equipped equipment.
How often do UPS batteries need to be replaced?
Most sealed lead-acid UPS batteries have a rated design life of 3-5 years, but actual life is shortened by higher operating temperatures, frequent deep discharge cycles, and normal chemical aging even in a device that's rarely used on battery. Most UPS units have a self-test and battery health indicator — replace batteries proactively rather than waiting for a failure during an actual outage.
Can I extend a UPS's runtime after purchase?
Many mid-size and larger UPS units, especially rack-mount and online models, support external battery packs that connect to the main unit to extend runtime well beyond the standard internal battery, without needing a larger primary UPS. Confirm the specific UPS model supports external battery expansion before purchase if extended runtime is a requirement.
