What Is a Pleated Air Filter?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is an ASHRAE 52.2 standard rating from 1 to 20 measuring how effectively a filter captures particles across a range of sizes — higher MERV numbers capture smaller particles at higher efficiency. MERV 8 is typical for standard residential/light commercial HVAC protection, MERV 11 adds finer particulate and some allergen capture, and MERV 13 approaches the level recommended by ASHRAE for reducing airborne respiratory particles, at the cost of higher airflow resistance.
Filter depth (1, 2, or 4 inches) affects both dust-holding capacity and pressure drop — a deeper pleated filter has more media surface area, so it holds more dust before pressure drop climbs and airflow drops, extending service life between changes. Nominal size (e.g. 16x25x1) is typically rounded down slightly from actual dimensions to allow the filter to seat in a standard frame, so ordering by the size printed on the old filter's frame, not a tape-measure reading of the housing opening, avoids a fit mismatch.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| MERV Rating | 1–20 per ASHRAE 52.2, common HVAC range 8–13 | Higher MERV captures finer particles but increases airflow resistance |
| Nominal Size | e.g. 16x25x1, 20x20x2 (LxWxD) | Rounded nominal dimension for frame fit — order by printed nominal size, not measured opening |
| Filter Depth | 1 in, 2 in, 4 in common depths | Deeper filters hold more dust and extend service life between changes |
| Pressure Drop | Rated at a given airflow, e.g. inches w.g. at 500 fpm | Higher-MERV/deeper filters raise system static pressure — must stay within the air handler's rated range |
| Media Type | Synthetic vs. cotton/polyester blend pleated media | Affects dust-holding capacity, moisture resistance, and MERV achievable at a given thickness |

Applications
Where Pleated Air Filters Get Used
Pleated air filters are specified anywhere an HVAC or air handling system needs scheduled particulate filtration matched to the equipment's airflow and pressure-drop tolerance.
Commercial HVAC & Building Management
Scheduled pleated filter replacement across rooftop units and air handlers as part of routine PM programs.
Industrial Facility Air Handling
Higher-MERV filters protecting process air handling equipment from dust and particulate in manufacturing environments.
Healthcare & Laboratory Facilities
MERV 13 and higher filtration supporting indoor air quality requirements in clinical and lab spaces.
Data Centers & Server Rooms
Pleated pre-filters protecting cooling equipment and reducing particulate load ahead of finer final filtration.
Multi-Family & Property Management
Bulk-ordered standard-size filters for scheduled replacement across residential HVAC units.
Restaurant & Food Service Facilities
Regular filter replacement supporting air quality and kitchen exhaust/makeup air system performance.
FAQ
Pleated Air Filters Questions, Answered
What MERV rating should I use?
MERV 8 is standard for general residential and light commercial HVAC protection. MERV 11 adds finer dust and some pollen/mold spore capture, suited to allergy-sensitive environments. MERV 13 is the level ASHRAE has associated with meaningfully reducing airborne respiratory particles, but check that your air handler is rated to handle the added pressure drop before upgrading.
How do I know what size filter to order?
Order by the nominal size printed on the frame of your existing filter (e.g. 16x25x1), not a tape-measure reading of the housing opening — nominal sizes are intentionally rounded down slightly from actual dimensions so the filter fits the frame with the correct clearance.
Will a higher MERV filter reduce my system's airflow?
Higher-MERV filters have denser media and generally higher airflow resistance at a given thickness, which can reduce airflow or raise static pressure if the air handler wasn't sized with margin for it — check your equipment's rated pressure drop range before jumping several MERV levels, especially on older or marginally sized systems.
How often should pleated filters be replaced?
Typical residential/light commercial guidance is every 60-90 days for a 1-inch filter under normal conditions, though dusty environments, pet presence, or continuous system operation can shorten that significantly. Deeper 4-inch filters generally last longer between changes due to greater dust-holding capacity — check pressure drop or a visual inspection rather than relying solely on a fixed calendar interval.
What's the difference between a 1-inch and 4-inch pleated filter?
A 4-inch filter has substantially more pleated media surface area than a 1-inch filter of the same face dimensions, giving it greater dust-holding capacity and a longer service life before pressure drop rises to the point of restricting airflow — but it requires an air handler with a deeper filter slot, so it's not a drop-in swap for a 1-inch filter housing.
