What Is a Keyed Different Padlock?
A keyed different padlock is manufactured with a unique internal pin-tumbler combination so its key will not open any other lock in the batch, unlike keyed-alike locks (all opened by one common key) or master-keyed systems (each opened by its own key plus one master key). Keyed different is the correct specification whenever locks are assigned to different individuals or areas that should not share access — for example, individual employee lockers or separate secured cabinets.
Body material and shackle construction determine cut-resistance and weather durability independent of the keying scheme: laminated steel bodies stack hardened steel plates for impact resistance at low cost, solid brass resists corrosion in wet or outdoor environments, and hardened boron-alloy shackles resist bolt cutters and hacksaws in high-security applications. Shackle height and diameter must clear the hasp or application being secured, which is a separate spec from the keying and body material choice.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Keying Type | Keyed different (unique key per lock), vs. keyed alike/master-keyed | Keyed different ensures no cross-access between locks — required when individuals should not share access |
| Body Material | Laminated steel, solid brass, solid steel | Brass resists corrosion in wet/outdoor settings; laminated steel offers high impact resistance at lower cost |
| Shackle Material | Hardened steel, boron alloy (high security) | Boron alloy shackles resist bolt cutters and hacksaw attacks better than standard hardened steel |
| Shackle Height/Clearance | Standard, long-shackle, and shrouded options | Must clear the hasp, chain, or fixture being secured — shrouded shackles limit bolt-cutter access |
| Weather Rating | Standard vs. weatherproof/marine-grade covered keyway | A covered keyway prevents freezing and corrosion of the pin mechanism in outdoor/marine exposure |

Applications
Where Keyed Different Padlocks Get Used
Keyed different padlocks are specified anywhere multiple locks need to be secured without any key opening more than its own assigned lock.
Employee Locker Rooms
Keyed different padlocks assigned individually so no employee can access another's locker.
Facility Cabinet & Storage Security
Individually keyed padlocks securing separate tool cribs, chemical cabinets, or supply rooms by department.
Rental Equipment & Fleet Security
Keyed different padlocks assigned per unit so a lost key doesn't compromise the whole fleet.
Warehouse & Distribution Security
Padlocks securing individual trailer doors, cages, or bins where access needs to stay segregated.
Outdoor & Utility Applications
Weatherproof keyed different padlocks on gates, utility boxes, and outdoor equipment enclosures.
General Facilities Security
Mixed-use padlocks issued for miscellaneous doors, gates, and storage where shared keying isn't wanted.
FAQ
Keyed Different Padlocks Questions, Answered
What is the difference between keyed different, keyed alike, and master keyed?
Keyed different means every padlock in the group has a unique key that opens only that lock. Keyed alike means all locks in a purchased set share one identical key. Master keyed means each lock has its own unique operating key, but a separate master key can also open every lock in the system — useful when individuals need private access but a supervisor needs universal access.
Can a keyed different padlock be re-keyed later to match another lock?
Standard keyed different padlocks are generally not field re-keyable — the pin configuration is set at manufacture. If you need locks that can be rearranged into keyed-alike or master-keyed groups later, look for a rekeyable padlock line specifically designed for that, rather than assuming a standard keyed-different lock can be converted.
What's the practical security difference between laminated steel and solid brass bodies?
Laminated steel bodies stack multiple hardened steel plates, giving good resistance to hammer and impact attacks at a lower price point, but are more prone to corrosion in wet environments unless plated. Solid brass resists corrosion very well for outdoor or marine use but is a softer metal, generally offering less impact resistance than a comparable laminated steel body — the choice depends on whether corrosion or impact resistance is the bigger risk in your environment.
Do keyed different padlocks come with more than one key per lock?
Most keyed different padlocks ship with two keys per lock as standard, since a lost single key would otherwise require replacing the entire lock (as they typically aren't field re-keyable). Confirm the key count included per lock when ordering in bulk to make sure spares are accounted for.
What shackle feature should I look for in a high-security application?
For resistance against bolt cutters and cutting tools, look for a hardened boron-alloy shackle rather than standard hardened steel, and consider a shrouded or shielded shackle design that limits the exposed shackle a cutting tool can get purchase on. These features address physical attack resistance and are independent from the keying scheme.
