What Is a Key Boxe?
A key box (or key cabinet) is a lockable enclosure with an internal hook or peg system for organizing and securing multiple sets of keys, sized by capacity — the number of key hooks it holds, commonly ranging from small 20-key units up to large 200+ key facility cabinets. Wall-mount cabinets are fixed installations for facility and fleet key management, secured with a mechanical key lock, combination dial, or electronic keypad/access-card lock, while portable key safes are smaller, standalone units often used for a single set of keys at a remote or outdoor access point.
Electronic access key boxes add an audit trail — logging who accessed which key hook and when — which is increasingly required in fleet, facility and contractor-access management where accountability for who had a given key matters. Capacity should be sized with headroom for growth, since key cabinets are not easily field-expanded, and mounting location (indoor office vs. outdoor equipment yard) drives whether a weather-resistant housing is needed.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Key Capacity | 20 to 200+ hooks per cabinet | Undersizing forces overcrowding keys per hook, defeating the organizational purpose |
| Lock Type | Mechanical key lock, combination dial, electronic keypad/card | Electronic locks provide audit trail; mechanical/combination are lower cost with no logging |
| Mounting | Wall-mount fixed, portable/freestanding | Determines whether the box is a fixed facility asset or a movable field unit |
| Housing Material | Steel, weather-resistant coated steel | Outdoor or exposed installations need a weather-resistant or gasketed housing |
| Access Logging | None (mechanical), digital audit log (electronic) | Required where accountability for individual key access must be documented |

FAQ
Key Boxes Questions, Answered
How do I choose the right key capacity?
Count current keys needing storage and add headroom for growth — key cabinets aren't easily field-expanded, so undersizing means either overcrowding hooks with multiple keysets or needing a second cabinet sooner than expected. A common approach is to size for roughly 25-50% more capacity than the current key count.
What's the advantage of an electronic key box over a combination lockbox?
An electronic key box logs who accessed the box and when, and can restrict access by individual user code or access card rather than one shared combination — important where accountability for who had a specific key matters, such as fleet vehicle or restricted-area key management. A combination lockbox is lower cost and simpler but offers no record of who opened it.
Are key boxes rated for outdoor installation?
Only specific models — standard indoor key cabinets are not weatherproof and will corrode or have lock mechanisms fail if exposed to rain and temperature swings. For outdoor or semi-exposed mounting (equipment yards, gate access points), choose a cabinet or safe specifically rated for outdoor/weather-resistant use.
Can a portable key safe be used for more than one key?
Most portable key safes are designed to hold a small number of keys (often on a single ring) rather than organize many individual key sets — they're best suited to single-property or single-vehicle access rather than facility-wide key management, where a larger wall-mount cabinet with individual hooks is the better fit.
What happens if I lose the combination or key to a key box?
For a mechanical key-locked cabinet, a locksmith can typically pick or bypass the lock, or the manufacturer may offer a master key/override procedure with proof of ownership. For combination models, resetting usually requires a manufacturer-specific reset procedure or professional locksmith service — check the manufacturer's documentation before purchase if backup access is a concern.
