What Is a Exit Device?

Exit devices (panic hardware) let building occupants exit through a door by pushing a horizontal crossbar, without needing to grip, twist, or otherwise operate a mechanism, satisfying the fundamental life-safety principle behind panic hardware codes. Rim devices mount the latching mechanism directly on the door's surface and latch to a strike on the frame, suiting single doors; mortise devices install into a pocket cut in the door edge, offering a lower profile with the latch mechanism inside the door itself. Vertical rod devices (surface or concealed) extend latching rods to the top and/or bottom of the door frame and are typically used on pairs of doors without a center mullion.

Exit devices installed on fire-rated door assemblies must themselves carry a fire label and comply with UL 10C/NFPA 80 requirements, and the specific device must be tested and listed for the fire rating of the door it's installed on — an exit device rated for a non-fire door cannot simply be substituted onto a fire door assembly, since the device and door must be tested together as a labeled assembly.

Can I install a standard exit device on a fire-rated door?
