What Is a Dock Ladder?
A dock ladder provides fixed or portable access between ground level and an elevated loading dock, platform, or truck bed, and is engineered to industrial duty ratings and rung spacing rather than the lighter-duty spacing used in general-purpose ladders. Fixed ladders are permanently bolted or welded to the dock structure and are used for regular access points; portable and wheeled ladders are repositioned as needed and are chosen where dock access points shift with operational needs or where a permanent structure can't be mounted.
Material selection follows the same tradeoff as other industrial access equipment: steel construction offers higher load capacity and durability under heavy foot traffic, while aluminum trades some load capacity for reduced weight, which matters directly for portable units that need to be moved by hand. Handrails, when included, are typically required by OSHA fall protection standards once the platform height exceeds a defined threshold, and rung spacing and tread depth follow OSHA fixed-ladder requirements to reduce slip and fall risk.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Sized to specific dock/platform elevation, commonly 3-6 steps | Must match the exact rise from ground to platform — not a generic 'tall enough' estimate |
| Material | Steel (higher capacity), aluminum (lighter weight) | Steel suits high-traffic fixed installations; aluminum suits portable units moved by hand |
| Mounting Type | Fixed bolt-on/weld-on vs. portable/wheeled | Fixed suits permanent access points; portable suits access points that change with operations |
| Handrails | Present per OSHA fall protection height thresholds | Required once platform height exceeds OSHA-defined thresholds for the application |
| Rung/Tread Spacing | Per OSHA fixed ladder standards | Non-compliant spacing increases slip and fall risk and can fail a safety inspection |

FAQ
Dock Ladders Questions, Answered
Should I choose a fixed or portable dock ladder?
Fixed ladders, bolted or welded permanently to the dock structure, are the right choice for a regular, unchanging access point with frequent traffic. Portable or wheeled ladders are better where access points shift with operational needs, multiple locations need occasional access from one ladder, or a permanent structure can't be mounted.
Steel or aluminum — which material should I choose?
Steel offers higher load capacity and durability, making it the standard choice for high-traffic fixed installations. Aluminum trades some load capacity for significantly reduced weight, which matters directly for portable units that need to be repositioned by hand — a heavy steel portable ladder becomes impractical to move regularly.
When are handrails required on a dock ladder?
OSHA fall protection standards require handrails once platform or ladder height exceeds defined thresholds for the specific application — this isn't optional above that height. Confirm the applicable threshold for your specific installation height and use case rather than assuming a ladder without handrails is compliant just because it's short.
How do I size a dock ladder for my platform?
Ladder height must be matched to the exact rise from ground level to the platform surface, not estimated — an undersized ladder leaves a step-up gap at the top that's itself a fall hazard, and an oversized ladder creates an awkward, unstable angle. Measure the actual platform height before ordering.
What rung spacing standard should a dock ladder follow?
Fixed access ladders should follow OSHA's fixed ladder standards for rung spacing and tread depth, which are set specifically to reduce slip and fall risk during repeated industrial use — this spacing differs from what's used on lighter-duty stepladders, so a compliant dock ladder isn't just any ladder tall enough to reach the platform.
