What Is a Bench Grinder Accessorie?
Bench grinder accessories must match three dimensions on the grinder itself: wheel diameter (commonly 6" or 8"), arbor bore diameter (the center hole, typically 1/2" or 5/8"), and maximum rated RPM — a wheel rated below the grinder's spindle speed must never be installed, as it can fail explosively. Wheel type (vitrified aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, wire, buffing) is chosen for the material and operation: general steel sharpening, non-ferrous grinding, wire wheel cleaning, or soft buffing.
Tool rests and eye shields are safety-critical adjustable accessories — OSHA and ANSI B7.1 guidance calls for tool rest gap no greater than 1/8 inch from the wheel face, and eye shields positioned to protect the operator from thrown grit and sparks. Both wear and require periodic readjustment as the wheel diameter shrinks with use.

How do I know what wheel diameter and arbor bore my grinder needs?
Check the wheel currently mounted (or the grinder's spec plate) for diameter and bore size — common combinations are 6" wheels with 1/2" bore or 8" wheels with 5/8" bore, but always verify rather than assume, since some grinders use a bushing to adapt a smaller bore wheel.
Can I install a wheel rated for lower RPM than my grinder's spindle speed?
No — never install a wheel rated below the grinder's actual spindle RPM. Grinding wheels can fail explosively if operated above their rated speed, and this is a serious safety hazard. Always confirm the wheel's stamped max RPM meets or exceeds the grinder's rating.
What's the right tool rest gap, and why does it matter?
ANSI B7.1 guidance calls for no more than 1/8 inch gap between the tool rest and the wheel face. A larger gap risks the workpiece being caught and pulled down into the nip point between the rest and the wheel, which is a common cause of bench grinder injuries.
When should I use a wire wheel versus a grinding wheel?
A wire wheel is for cleaning — removing rust, paint, and scale from a surface without significant material removal from the base part — while a grinding wheel is for actual stock removal and sharpening. Using a wire wheel where a grinding wheel is needed (or vice versa) wastes the accessory and gives poor results.
Do bench grinder wheels need to be dressed or trued periodically?
Yes — grinding wheels glaze and become uneven with use, reducing cutting efficiency and increasing vibration. A wheel dresser tool restores a flat, sharp cutting face and should be used periodically, particularly before precision sharpening work.
