What Is a Battery Tester?
Load testers apply a controlled electrical load to a battery and measure how voltage holds up under that load, simulating real starting or discharge conditions — this is the traditional method for automotive and industrial batteries and gives a direct read on a battery's ability to deliver current under stress. Digital conductance testers instead measure the battery's internal conductance using a small AC signal, inferring state of health without discharging the battery, which makes them faster and non-destructive but reliant on accurate internal algorithms calibrated to the battery type.
Battery chemistry and rated capacity (CCA for automotive starting batteries, amp-hour for deep-cycle and industrial batteries) determine the correct tester range — a tester calibrated for small CCA automotive batteries won't accurately assess a large industrial forklift battery bank, and vice versa. Simple handheld testers for household AA/AAA/9V cells use a basic load-and-voltage read and are not interchangeable with automotive or industrial-grade testers.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Test Method | Load test vs. digital conductance test | Load testing discharges the battery briefly; conductance testing is faster and non-destructive |
| Voltage Range | Commonly 1.5V to 12V/24V for automotive/industrial | Must match the battery's nominal voltage — mismatched range gives inaccurate readings |
| CCA/Capacity Range | Automotive CCA range or industrial amp-hour range | Testers are calibrated to a specific capacity range for accurate state-of-health readings |
| Battery Chemistry Support | Lead-acid, AGM, gel, lithium | Conductance algorithms differ by chemistry — verify the tester supports the battery type |
| Display Type | Analog meter vs. digital readout | Digital readouts typically provide more precise pass/fail and percentage-of-health data |

FAQ
Battery Testers Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a load tester and a conductance tester?
A load tester applies an actual electrical load to the battery and measures how the voltage holds up, giving a direct real-world read on starting/discharge capability but briefly discharging the battery. A conductance tester sends a small AC signal to estimate internal battery health without discharging it, making it faster and repeatable but dependent on the tester's calibration for the battery's chemistry and size.
Can I use an automotive battery tester on a deep-cycle or industrial battery?
Only if the tester's voltage and capacity range explicitly covers that battery type — automotive testers are typically calibrated for CCA ranges of standard starting batteries, and applying them to a much larger industrial or deep-cycle battery bank can give inaccurate results. Check the tester's rated capacity range before using it outside automotive applications.
Do I need a different tester for AGM or lithium batteries versus standard lead-acid?
Many modern digital and conductance testers support multiple chemistries, but the internal algorithm needs to be set correctly for the battery type being tested, since AGM, gel, standard flooded lead-acid and lithium batteries all have different voltage and conductance characteristics. Confirm the tester explicitly lists support for the chemistry you're testing.
How accurate are handheld consumer battery testers?
Handheld testers for AA, AAA, 9V and similar cells give a reasonably accurate general charge-level read using a basic load-and-voltage measurement, sufficient for household use, but they are not a substitute for automotive or industrial-grade load and conductance testers when precise state-of-health data is needed.
What does a hydrometer test and when would I use one instead of an electronic tester?
A hydrometer measures the specific gravity of the electrolyte in a flooded lead-acid battery's individual cells, which indicates state of charge at the cell level rather than the battery as a whole. It's used alongside or instead of electronic testers specifically for serviceable flooded lead-acid batteries, not sealed AGM, gel or lithium batteries.
